I think you'll find that Lego train is an electric (the giveaway is on the roof). I only have a Diploma in Diesel Identification; I can't be expected to keep up with electrics as well...

Tom (pondering what to do about the Southern Region EDs...)

Crikey, this Diesel Ident lark is harder than it looks.

So just to get this straight: Loco has a 3rd rail pick up shoe? Still not conclusivly an electric, could be a Southern Region diesel. Loco has a pantograph? Not conclusively an electric, could be a diesel with onboard TV. Loco is boxy looking and has clag coming out of the chimney? Might not be a diesel, could be a Bulleid steam engine. Any other quirks I should be aware of?

What about something that made a whining/roaring sort of sound and looked like a Class 20 mated with a Black 5?

Can you just imagine a Deltic approaching say Retford at 100+ mph with this bellowing forth...

For the mighty Deltics, I was thinking of something like this:

OK, you don't need the horns on the mighty machines, you KNOW when one is coming, starts with a low gentle hum, gets louder, and, there is was...........gone. At 100mph.........ish.:tape:

That's easy, a bit of bribery will do it, send a case of Laphroaig and all will be forgiven.

NOTE TO SELF: Tricky spelling that. Maybe find something similar... What's this? It's light brown, smooth, and comes from up north. Just need to stick a label over that name. 'Smiths' does sound a bit common.

Southern region class 71s have both shoes and pantographs. The outwardly similar 74s had shoes and a diesel engine. Sorry if I've confused you further!

    No, not a problem:

    - Got a 3rd rail pickup shoe. Therefore clearly a diesel.
    - Got a pantograph. Therefore clearly has onboard TV.

So a class 71 is clearly a diesel with onboard TV. Simples...
