    Afternoon All,

Back in October, 1964, the London based Home Counties Railway Society ran a special train from King's Cross to York using Britannia class Pacific 70020 MERCURY. It was a nice day so I was able to take lots of pictures and these are now on my Flickr site. If anyone would like to see them, this is the first one; clicking on it will enlarge it and take you to the others :

There are also some other pictures taken in the North East earlier that year.

Hope that they are of interest.

Nice photos. Wasn't this the tour that was originally booked to be hauled by a Duchess when they were all withdrawn
    the week before?

Quite so. It was supposed to be 46256 SIR WILLIAM A. STANIER, FRS but, as you say, they had all been withdrawn the previous month.

HCRS, that brings back many memories! I went on at least two of their trips. KX to Doncaster behind 46245 in June 1963, a very fast run on the return, near 100mph I believe. I understand that this tour was originally scheduled for Castle haulage but gauging problems prevailed (like today!). The second one was Paddington to Swindon behind 72006 in December 1963 - a very very cold day if I recall.

Happy, happy days indeed. Things ran without the fuss & provado that happens today.

I was a member of the earlier Home Counties Railway Club and spent many Sundays travelling to various parts of the country train spotting in the 1950s and early 1960s. The Sunday Excursions that BR used to run were very useful for that purpose. I still keep in touch with some of the friends that I made in those far off days.
