Did some sort of modern safety equipment kick in to cause the stop perhaps?

Maybe someone on board got over excited and pulled a cord?
From ACW's film it looks like a loss of brake pressure for whatever reason caused the stop.

Thanks very much gents. I wasn't sure about doing that shot at Ais Gill, but now of course, I'm pleased I did. The sound was tremendous and what a great piece of enginemanship to restart a heavy train on a 1 in 100 grade without a slip.

Thats a quite stonking bit of filming and superb handling of the engine from both driver and fireman - Number 9 was feathering nicely as she came into view and a restart on that incline with no hint of a slip. Who was it that once said A4's can't climb hills?!

Judging by the large steam leak coming from halfway down the train, I'll need to take my longjohns when the Mods are doing this trip in March. Can't imagine there'll be much heat getting through to the back of the train. Or maybe that's just the buffet car boiler telling everyone it's time for the brew?

Superb footage from the usual Stephen and Austin well done chaps. Great performance by the A4 over Shap the weather may have been dull but that was the only thing the sound at Shap Wells was superb. My two shots from yesterday at Shap Wells and on the return at Crosby Garrett thanks Simon. It was nice to me Shep Wooley at Shap yesterday.

Maybe explains why 86101 was apparently coupled to the train at Carlisle supposedly to get some ETH going through. Icebreakers currently due to leave on 23rd Feb......

Wonder if we can have blankets like the Steam Dreams Bristol trip did last year, incidentally the last one WC did with them.

It was on the train to heat the empty stock, apparently there were lots of complaints last week when passengers returned to the train after the stop, steam heat was ok in the buffet car. We were told the two 86s and the 87 were going to be scrapped in a couple of weeks after ice breaking was finished. Seems a bit sad that no one wants to take them on, would have thought one would have been very useful to WCR.

Does that mean I can cop the Class 86 for "heatage" (if not haulage)?

More info on the decision by ETL to reduce it's loco fleet (including the 87/86 at Carlisle) in this thread:
    http://railways.national-preservati...-traction/39107-etl-[aclg]-dispose-fleet.html

Don't think WCR would have the technical knowledge/maintenance facilities for electric locos.

They might be more usefull in 5 years time when there's a hell of a lot more wires, but at the minute, only something like 5% at best of WCRC workings can justify Electric haulage and ACLG need money now, frustrating thing is, they are unlikely to be availible in 5 years (86259 excepted), 90's and newer Electrics obviously never had vac brakes so no much point looking to those either.

The CME on the non steam legs demands Electric haulage with 100MPH and hard acceleration (to use the fast line for long stretches as opposed to the relief), no Diesel in the UK can match that performance.

So the Class 86 can keep up with the Pendo's pretty well? I was surprised on last year's trip how much fast line running we had. It felt just like a vintage West Coast passenger service from a few years ago, with an 86 pulling Mk.1 stock - rather than a railtour having to run on the slow lines or be looped to let the "real" trains come past. The people sitting around my table were pretty vintage too.
