Officials in blacked out windows with armed guards, what else is buried that they don't want people to find? or is there a likily case that very soon, there will be spitfire parts appearing on the black market being sold by these shaddowy government officials, assuming that they actually were government officials

Go about your business people. Nothing to see here.

Shame, but not that surprising, even to those of us who were on the optimistic end of the scale.

Without a paper trail any spare parts would be paperweights ....

Certainly looks more and more like the aviation answer to the missing Lynton & Barnstaple loco Lew up the Amazon in Brazil, which keeps supposedly being "discovered" every now and then.

I expect a fully intact Spitfire or two will be found under the other end of a certain car-park in Leicester. I'm sure one of the parking spaces is marked 'S'.

Come on now the S******c R*******e is not buried in Leicester, its in a secret siding under box tunnel , the entrance to which is so very well hidden that you can search for years and never locate it , unless you happen to have the MOD secret sites map .
Getting back to the dig ,werent the organisers going to try another location? its all gone very quite again, i think that someone is going to end up with a lot of egg on their face very soon, when this ends up being a waste of someones time and a lot of money, and seing as its Russian money involved , i hope the organiser is very well insured against being buried in a hole himself .

From the team's FB page ......

Update: Hi there, apologies for silence, I've been away in San Francisco on business. So, David and the team tried to recover the crate in Myitkyina but the ground was far too waterlogged and the pumps they were using weren't able to keep the water out. They are waiting for the ground to dry out and will then make another attempt. They are now back working at the airport and have promising survey results in areas where they were originally hoping to look. I'm afraid it doesn't look like anything is going to happen particularly quickly; even confirming the 'absence' of the planes is still going to be a slow and arduous process. I'll keep adding any updates when I receive them.

What puzzles me is that only now are they referring to archival evidence that a mere 37 were delivers by boat to Rangoon and that most Spitfires in the area were re-exported in 1946. Wonder when they discovered that gem of information.

Apparently in the National Archives at Kew. Seems odd that a more thorough search was not done before the megabucks started getting spent, but I guess that the excitement overruled such logic.

I think it's likely the company helping fund it were doing so for the publicity, it didn't really matter whether they found them.

They've certainly got publicity out of the whole affair, that's for sure.
