Monthly Round up January 2013 SVR-Online Forum :: View topic - Monthly Round-Up from GM [public forum]

"Items that were discussed or bought to the attention of the Holdings Board in January included:

    Motive Power Department:
42968 has now been withdrawn from traffic pending overhaul.
43106 is having a new drag box fitted. Thanks to Ian Walker, Martin White and many others for organising the large volunteer work team that turned out on the weekend of the 13th and 14th January 2013.
4566 has a crack at the bottom of the safety valve. Motion and vacuum pump work is being undertaken.
2857 is having work done replacing copper steam pipes in the smoke box.
7714 is on the jacks and a full assessment of one of the cylinder blocks is being undertaken.
34027 boiler will be arriving in February with the new CNC machine producing the stays for this boiler and 7714. A mezzanine floor is being fitted in the Boiler Shop to provide better storage and a cubicle in which the CNC operative can work. One stay takes 3.5 minutes to produce, on a manual machine this takes more than 30 minutes. The machine will be used for our own work and for contract.
The installation of the new water processing (RO) plant for Kidderminster will take place before we begin operation in February".

34053 is reported as failed with broken cylinder cover. With 5164 at the MHR for their Spring Gala this weekend, this only leaves 1501 and the repaired 2857 to run the weekend steam services. On sunday there has been alternation to the timetable with the dinner now being attached to the bridgnorth set at KR.

When will the SVR's Loco Dept learn that you need to be putting them back together as quickly as you take them apart. I gather 75069 is about to be torn down soon.

75069 is already being stripped down.

Its nice to see people commenting on how badly the SVR is doing with locos. Where as the NYMR is in just as deeper water with only 75029 and 61264 (even that has failed for this weekend)

I would hazard a guess, 34053 will utilise 34027s cylinder cover to get it back into service while her own is off for repair.

I agree, a little less of the negativity guys, they are doing their best and it is hard to be prepared for every eventuality. You can't forsee a broken cylinder cover. Reorganisation at MPD appears to be well in hand and if you look at svrlive.com you can see the fantastic speed with which 43106 has been broken down for its intermediate. You can't double the size of a working fleet in a trice, and as pointed out the SVR isn't the only one facing this particular set of problems.

75069 is in the yard with dismantling already underway. And I too wouldn't be surprised if a quick deal is done to get the necessary part from 34027.

That's a ;esson you should perhaps be preaching elsewhere - the Mid Hants, for example have 76017, 30506, 30828, and 75079 all undergoing major overhaul on their site and both 41312 and 34105 have just been dismantled as well. I know that some of these are owned by separate groups, but Ropley yard and shed are not that big and six locos under overhaul must represent a serious competition for space and facilities.

I was in on Wednesday working on 42968 and saw people working on 75069, 4566, 2857, 43106 and 7714. Plenty going on.

7812 was having parts cleaned up too. The SMR lot are too poor to own tools! Their donation of a brush was gratefully received (by me).

Reported that a new cylinder cover has been fitted to 34053, so hopefully it should be back working soon.

    Cover fitted.

Just the small matter of painting and re fitting of the motion as it was the rear cover on the drivers side.

SVR Live comments that 43106 will soon be available for traffic, so presumably boiler and dragbox work largely complete.

SVR Live also states that a hire-in engine for the Summer season has been secured. ( not identified at this stage)

That is not a surprise that there is another hire in for the year but i guess we could say that SKP is not a hire in more resident now. Nunney Castle ?

Well, with 42968 now out and 7714 and 34027 going to be a while before they are running, I suppose we will need cover. As for Nunney, I know there were talks but it's gone quiet. Really, a class 4 or 5 is what we need for the summer so we'll have to wait for an announcement which hopefully won't be too long.

I think the SVR would be vety lucky to find a class 4 or 5 available i think they are likely to end up with something larger

The new dragbox fabrication is currently being machined, the tender being re-varnished, the frames also receiving a lick of paint over the last week courtesy of yours truly. She's a fair way off as yet but work is progressing...
