At last year's SSG I bought an excellent book on the NYMR from the souvenir shop at Pickering called 'A Past and Present Companion, The North Yorkshire Moors Railway' by John Hunt. I think it's very good and can recommend it to all. On Page 53 Mr Hunt mentions that the line achieved its summit of 532 feet near to milepost 19 from Rillington Junction

My question is where on the line is milepost 19 and is there a public footpath nearby from which photos can be taken?

    Regards

Milepost 19 is surprisingly enough at a place referred to as Goathland Summit and, yes, it is almost next to a public footpath (50yds?). It is called the Lyke Wake Walk and relatively easily accessible from the A169.

My Explorer OL27 doesn't mention Lyke Wake Walk, is it in Fen Bog?

Thank you, found it on 'Streetmap'. The Lyke Dyke Walk does seem to cross the railway at Fen Bog. I'll do some looking around in May at the SSG.

44871's move to the NYMR postponed due to an overheated axlebox requiring attention.

Interesting piece just broadcast on BBC Radio 4. NYMR replaces loco numbers with large barcodes and launches a trainspotting ap for enthusiasts. Paul Taylor IT Manager of the NYMR interviewed as S15 825 arrives sporting a large elongated barcode. Pete Waterman interviewed and thinks loco numbers should be retained. Northern Rail chap thinks they will adopt it so that "customers can keep track of trains..." given that there are stretches of line with "many miles" between signal boxes....etc.

Yes, and it is the 1st April.....

Convincing though, and I might say well thought out!

Yes, it took me five minutes to remember the date!

It was extremely well done, though!

Time is running out for visitors to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to ride behind Engine 825 as the engine’s boiler certificate expires in early July and will see the withdrawal of the much loved engine from the Railway at the end of June.
With the basic specification for a ten year overhaul including:
Striping the cladding off the boiler
Lifting off the cab & boiler
    Removing all tubes
Checking the integrity of the boiler structure, e.g. thickness of plates, examine inside and out for pitting scoring and other corrosion damage
Do the work required; e.g. replace thin barrel plates, firebox sheets, etc.
    Retube
    Hydraulic & Steam tests
    Refit boiler to frames
    Rebuild the locomotive
    Steam test in frames
    Final test and running in.

The last few weeks of June may be the last time for the foreseeable future that visitors will be available to ride behind the Southern S15 Class Locomotive, 825 owned by the Essex Locomotive Society.
Danielle Ramsey Marketing Manager explains, “Although it is sad news that 825 will most likely see its last run during our 70s super boogie wonderland event on the 29th and 30th June
