Ithink that may have been the plan of its first owner in preservation. I doubt if it is the case now.

Wasn't 34073 rumoured to have been bought a year or so ago but as far as I'm aware its still at Bury along with 34046, 35009, 35022 and 35027.

I think this list is correct for all the WC/BoB's as they are at the moment. Feel free to point out any wrongs.

34007 - in service at MHR
34010 - awaiting restoration at Herston
34016 - awaiting overhaul due to move away from MHR next year
34023 - awaiting overhaul at the Bluebell
34027 - under overhaul at Severn Valley . Due back I think this year
34028 - withdrawn this year or next from Swanage
34039 - under overhaul at Great Central . Not sure when she's due to steam again
34046 - Having mainline equiment fitted at Bury. Should on the mainline soon.
34051 - At Mid Hants awaiting cosmetic restoration
34053 - in service at the Severn Valley
34058 - awaiting restoration at Mid Hants
34059 - awaiy=ting boiler work at the Bluebell
34067 - in service on the mainline
34070 - in service at Swanage
34072 - under overhaul at Herston
34073 - awaiting restoration at Bury
34081 - under overhaul at Nene Valley. Due back 2014.
34092 - under overhaul at KWVR. Due back this year
34101 - under overhaul at NYMR
34105 - Under overhaul at MHR

As for 34010 I haven't seen anywhere report that its going to be disguised as 34109.

I don't know whether Mr Walton-Binns was particularly fond of the original locomotive 34109 or was he an admirer of Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory. Personally I always thought of L-M as being one of the slightly less savory characters of his time and that Sir Quintin Brand would have been equally deserving of the honour of having one of Mr Bulleids finest named after him. Only an opinion of course.

Pity SR never asked us before printing that. Boiler will be steamed in 2013 but very unlikely she'll return to traffic before 2014.

Quite so. L-M's "big wing" ideas could well have lost us the BoB if he'd been in charge of 11 Group. Brand was far more deserving IMO.

I think we can be pretty certain that 34010 won't be named after Trafford Leigh-Mallory if it is restored. Indeed it's hard to see how it will be restored in the foreseeable future as it will cost around a million to do so. Moreover, SLL has a string over overhauls coming up; 34072, 34028, 80104, and 34070 all in the next 5/6 years, and it's obviously cheaper and simpler to overhaul the existing fleet rather than dive into the restoration of a Barry wreck.

BTW, did you know that Trafford was the brother of George Leigh-Mallory, who died on Everest in 1924?

On a brighter note, as I write I am sipping a glass of the Bewdley Brewery's new Sir Keith Park beer, and very nice it is too: https://picasaweb.google.com/116839141471298057728/SKPAtSVR#5859015848460488242

    Nick,
Just out of interest, how much did SKP cost to overhaul as a ballpark figure? That way should give everyone an idea on Sidmouth....
The Beer does look good as does the picture on the front!! ;-)

I wonder if SLL would consider selling 80104 and putting the money towards overhauling 34010.

I think SKP cost £773,000, which included a fair proportion of volunteer labour. Sidmouth is at least as much work, and nothing has got cheaper. If anyone has a viable plan for how it could be restored we'd be interested to hear it. Nick

Could set up a parts sharing arrangement with 34028, which i gather comes out of ticket this year? Huge commonality of components as they're the same class. Save costs of building new tenders, motion, wheelsets, brakes, superheater headers, etc by transfering parts which 34010 hasn't got, from 34028. If 34072 is anything to go by, 34028 may be standing idle for 10 years anyway, so may as well put some of her to use. Then when 34010 comes out of traffic, trade them back. Two locos for not quite the price of two. And precludes the heart-wrenching sale of another loco, ala 80078

It's not quite like that. 34028 is a complete loco, and in pretty good condition considering it's approaching its 10 year overhaul. Our expectation is that it would be a relatively simple overhaul (1-2 years) and would be done as soon as 72 is complete - no long delay. So in this case, to involve Sidmouth or its components would cost much more and delay completion.

Latest Steam Beano mag hit the mat this morning (#413). Interesting article on p28. 34067 has been fitted with 3rd-rail pick-ups on the tender, principally for running ETH but also to drive 2 250hp electric motors on the tender, which can be controlled from the loco cab or via "blue star" multiple-unit cables from another loco. Could be just the thing when restarting on a gradient (e.g. Martin Mill bank). There's a picture, credited to James Bunch, of the apparatus being inspected.

Nearly forgot - there's supposed to be a "secret test run" on Monday 1st April...

The 3-rail Hornby Dublo West Country is much more valuable than the 2-rail version. :))

Meanwhile, 34027's boiler has arrived back at Bridgnorth from SDR, still needs the stays to be made and fitted.

Good one. Maybe this is the first step to full electric traction for Tangmere with added steam effect built in......just like OO gauge.:behindsofa:
