VT - Marylebone Flyer (Inter-City) - Re-scheduled for April 6th

Spark Arrestors help, but they don't cut out the issue 100%, the Bristolian was undertaken in different conditions (warm with new vegetation growth and no dry period beforehand), seems to be the dead vegetation after the artic temperatures only take a couple of days without rain to make it tinder dry.

What's needed is warmer weather, then a downpour should solves the issue.

 

@ buseng - reason for the original question was in hope of a response of sense as what you had suggested made prefect sense, even more so based on the 8f, at that point of time. If I'm honest I wanted to see if there was any glimmer of hope that we wouldn't have a diesel on the front, sadly not :-(

Nothing to do with vandals or her spark arrestor in my opinion at all, a post a while ago mentioning about the dry vegetation vs snow is exactly / almost word prefect to what the driver said to me at marylebone when asked.

Ps - due to prospective droughts in the foreseeable future white water rafting is out of the question.

Managed to grab a shot this morning of the outward leg at Acocks Green. Just about enough sun to achieve a decent shot. Waited for 2 hours at Moor street for the arrival (32 minutes late). I think we all feel the same for Bob, Alistair, all the TYS guys for the persistant easterly wind drying everything out even after over a foot of snow of the last 2 weeks. At least we have the Chelt flyer to look forward too in a months time!

I've been out and about here and there and missed all the drama of the line-side fires and the aftermath. Not the time of year you'd expect vegetation to be so dry. Very unfortunate.
Anyway here are a couple of photos taken from the bridge in Dark Lane between Hatton Station and the top of Hatton Bank. Luckily there is a slight up gradient just before the bridge and the smoke came on just in time.

The lineside is so brown, it looks more like midsummer during a heatwave than early spring. The cold has stopped any new growth appearing and the lack of rain coupled with the Beast From The East blowing for the last two and a half weeks has made things tinder dry. Such a shame that it spoilt a great day out.
When you say your prayers tonight don't forget to ask for a good dousing of rain.

I think you will find that the wind has been from an easterly quarter since the end of January Kevin, not every day, bit predominately so. You will appreciate this, years ago I was told by a Brixham trawlerman that the direction of the weather (wind) on an equinox and solstice day would mostly remain the same for the next ninety days. I have watched this for more years than I can remember and it seems quite accurate, so where was the wind direction on March 20th ?................East brrrrr

 

Ah yes, the sun was out, I guessed you would have emerged from your hibernation cave..... :tongue:

Got the train twice at Birmingham Moor Street Outbound, and Olton Inbound lost a load of time by the end out of interest what happened to 47245 after it came off is it a Tyseley or back to Southall.

Excellent run down yesterday. It was a shame the diesel was neede on the return but, I think, there was no choice and I support the descision.
Mr Churchill took us out of Birmingham and gradually allowed 5043 to warm to the task. Very sensible engine management as 5043 would have been completely cold. Soon bowling along well with speeds well up to maximum and remaining there most of the way. We were slowed severely approaching Leamington but recovered well climbing up to Harbury and then again at Ayhno. The recovery up the bank to Arley tunnel appears to be where the fire took place. There were a number of adverse signals after High Wycombe due, I believe, to a late running stopper and then we almost stopped at West Ruislip. Ray slowed the train quite sharply at sight of the yellow and this allowed us to creep towards the red with speeds below walking pace for some time but we didn't actually stop.
Total time 2hr 8 1/2 mins for 111 1/2 miles, excellent bearing in mind it wasn't a clean run.

A shame about the 47 but understandable in the circumstances

 

Yes Mike one of the few weather sayings that seems to be correct nine times out of ten.
Strangely even the fish seem to know when the wind is in the east and would leave the relatively shallow waters of their feeding grounds where we would catch them, and head for deeper water where we couldn't get at them. I'm no marine biologist so I can't explain this behaviour but it definitely happens.
