    A4 Bittern is to run three tours over the East Coast Main Line at speeds of up to 90mph in late June and early July.

    Personally, I dont see the point of this. If anything, it is setting Bittern up to fail in a year when it is desirable to have as many A4's in steam as possible. From both an 'on train' point of view and a spectator/fotter point of view, I find it hard to believe that you will notice the difference between 75mph and 90mph. On the other hand, the locomotive will notice the difference. Components will be run faster, and harder, and are more likely to fail. Sure enough, try to relive the glory days of the thirties when Mallard set the world speed record, but realise that you can't just pop in to Doncaster/Darlington (for example) to replace the inside cylinder in a week or so when it all goes belly up...
