That has to be quite an expensive extraction.

Yes, That is not a cheap lift by any means. The Loco owner must be very enthusiastic about the restoration

Presumably though there was some agreement that when it got craned in , there would be an exit and that the costs would not necessarily have to be born by the owner

Anybody care to hazard a guess as to the cost of the operation in total?

No. But the setup started at 18:00 with the road due to open at 08:00 I think. So a fair few man-hours.

Looks like a Leibherr 500 tonne crane. No idea how much to hire today but 15 years ago a similar size crane from Baldwins was costing £7,000/8 hr day. At least double that, now, and the rest for all the add-on kit. Low loaders would depend on how far they are going Again, another guess at £1200 each if only going to Tyseley(?). Don't know where all the personnel came from but, if they are being paid, that will add a tidy sum. No change out of £22K but I'm probably miles adrift!

If your right, then the restoration must be a Doddle if it needs that level of deep pockets.. That or a knock down sales price, or a generous helping hand with the removal.

I'm led to believe that removal from the station was at the expense of the organisation that put it there. Not the GWRPG nor the new owner (assuming the deal has gone through).

I wondered if some other organisation was paying the costs and what the background to it all was. I don't even know why it was put there in the first place! However, even if the owners are paying, in the scheme of a Barry restoration it isn't a huge sum and, unless they are cheap cardboard replicas, the loco has a full set of coupling/connecting rods, probably making it more financially attractive than many other restorations.

It was put there when the station was returned to it's former glory after years of neglect. I believe it was Adrian Shooter and Chiltern Trains that gave the impetus along with the rebuilding of the Bullring over the road. The full story is here........ http://www.tyseleylocoworks.co.uk/tlw/2885_moor_street.htm

Does anyone have any recent news about what the future holds for 2885 following its removal back to Tyseley? I cannot see anything on the Tyseley Loco Works website. Rumour was that it had possibly been sold by GWRPG, did this ever happen?

As a "Barry" restoration project do we know in any detail 2885's basic condition at all? eg firebox condition?

I can confirm that 2885 is at Tyseley and it is being worked on. As it is owned by a private group, I cannot comment further.

I believe they will be on hand to answer questions at our Open Weekend..... 5th and 6th of July.

    Regards

    Ben

Further to 46118's question I can confirm that the loco has been sold to active preservationists with extensive experience with ex GW locos & is at Tyseley.

Mechanically the loco is v near complete and undisturbed with all its own motion/con rods etc & items such as wheel tyres are in near new condition.
The copper firebox is in good condition having been fitted not that long before withdrawal though checking the condition of the steel outer firebox awaits a boiler lift.
The previous cosmetic restoration did much to conserve steel plate work.
The tender is ex BREL Swindon & is 99% complete retaining the items normally stolen from those at Woodhams, it will though need a complete new tank.
Missing fittings are being acquired as opportunities arise - the major missing items are the boiler fittings , common GW items, for which patterns exist.

In short this loco is something of a time warp - its basic mechanical condition & mechanical completeness are remarkable given that it is over 50 years since it was taken out of service.

Whilst some work has been undertaken already major work awaits completion of existing projects in which the owners are involved.

Ben VT and 1472: Many thanks for the update. Sounds like a particularly good example for further service.

I suppose it is too much to ask as to which Heritage line--if any--the new owners might be affiliated to?

Whilst the owners have particular affiliations no agreements have been entered into in that respect and to a pre answer the inevitable livery question this one will be turned out in a wholly authentic colour/style!

Does that mean it will not be Black then?

    That is good news.
