Unfortunately I was busy (and didn't have my glasses on) a steam loco came through Derby today at about 11.45. Anyone know what it was?

46233 was in the area about that time, but not in Derby. It was scheduled to run on the line from Sheet Stores Junction to Stenson Junction on its journey from Swanwick to Crewe.

It definitely came through Derby (heading south), it was green - that's all I could see from my office!

I don't know the area well, but I think 46233 might have been re-routed via Derby if it needed to reverse. IIRC, there's no turntable at Butterley. Not sure why they couldn't reverse around Trent Junction - perhaps it's just too busy?

IIRC any train heading into Derby has a choice of route to either go directly into the station for a routeing north to Sheffield or take a right fork shortly before the approach which curves into the station from the northern direction for a routeing south to Burton or Crewe via Stenson Junction.

No Fred, there is no south to west connection, anything from the Trent Jct. direction has to reverse in Derby Station to get to the Burton line.
