Hope todays trip goes all to plan- I'd of love to have been on it myself but for the blasted car costing me an arm and a leg recently. Looking forward to the reports later of the attacks on Shap.

Message from a friend onboard saying 66mph at Grayrigg and 10 mins early . Video to follow later on after the return leg. Steve

    Thank you Sergeant.

First news of either of the great trips this weekend, the other being the "silent" A4s to Scotland.

Promoted to Sergeant Major with immediate effect.

I think that 66 mph beats any of my climbs timed at that point in 1967-1968 behind a Castle and Duchess combination.

Crested Shap summit at about 60, various GPS gave that as average. proceeded to Carlisle at a brisk pace and arrived about 20 up on what must have been a rather slack schedule, time start to stop from Carnforth again not confirmed, but even time according to my timing.

    Promotion for you too Ralph.

I'm not proving very good at timing from the lineside off a video clip. I need mileposts flashing past the coach window. LOL! But working on 65 feet for each coach I make it around 57 - 58 mph passing the camera from the first clip. But I still haven't got one of these right yet, and if the timers were getting 60 mph with all their new fangled modern GPS stuff I reckon they must be right. (Stopwatches in my day. Except for certain Bournemouth drivers when it was calendars).

Anyone got an accurate train length please?

Whatever. It looked nice and if it was a fast time to Carlisle then that is wonderful. And if it was an even time from Carnforth Dugout, or wherever it started from, then that is really great news. A rare even time over that stretch I would guess.

I shall now get another nagging, (deserved), from brother Don who keeps telling me to get a run behind 5043. Although at present I'm only fit to time from my study armchair.

Arrived at Carnforth on the return, steady run heading south with what must have been a spectacular blast through Penrith at about 75. 70s maintained towards the summit but dropped to mid to low 60s after Shap village and 63 noted at the summit. Relaxed run the rest of the way and only 10 minutes up approaching Carnforth.

I did, thank you very much! :)

I liked the first part of the clip, very dramatic & brooding skies, certainly NOT hanging about, I'll bet Ralph & Co on board are enjoying themselves!!!

Its already doing the rounds between my dad & his mates, I wont repeat what he wrote in reply for fear of starting a war, suffice to say he's LMS thru & thru....................................................................

Are the driver/fireman combinations known for both the up and down trips? Either way - whoever is firing the Castle in both of those clips looks as though they are working damn hard! Fantastic clips as well Guys - thanks for sharing.

Cracking shot, Grommit! :) ( no offence meant, I just couldn't say the same thing three times!..................................................)

Nice to see different views of the same train from more or less the same locations. :)
