I pity the crew of the Duchess, there are several shots with the Castle making some much clag that the 6233 crew and the following few coaches could not see anything ahead.
I also see on another thread that there are some poor misguided people who are mistakenly of the opinion that the blue loco doing a run in Scotland could make more noise than the Castle and Duchess. o_O

Another nice under the wires shot, I think all the juice gear adds a lot to the photo. And the bush just gives separation between the boiler bits and the mast.

Yep. A really good, "railway" shot.

Just been downloading the data from my GPS for the northbound run, OK in this format it's not too clear and I cannot find a way to split it up so that I can just show the section covering the climp up Shap, but it gives you an idea of what is available. Obviously the dip round the 30 mile point is Shap, but you can clearly seed how elsewhere the speed stayed in the high 60s to mid 70s.
Ignore the flat line bits at the start, I found strangely that with the receiver by the window on the west side of the train I kept losing the signal, getting 3 satellites, but putting it on the other side side, east, it worked fine with up to 7 satellites being received. Is there any logical reason for this, it would indicate perhaps that the majority of satellites are to the east of us, could this be the case?

Elevation and speed profiles. South.gif The Southbound run profiles show a similar problem with the signal at the start and there are a couple of points of flat top sections when the signal was lost, dense overhanging trees in cuttings being one cause.

Very interesting indeed Ralph. Many thanks for posting it here, (the Northbound run). If that was an even time run, it's a good one.

And, at present it looks like I might have got one of my attempts at timing from a video sort of right! I.e the Shap summit area speed, where I thought 57 - 58 ish.

I don't have enough experience with GPS to answer your questions. When timing seriously, (very rare these days I'm sorry to say), an electronic stop watch and plenty of 1/4 miles passing times are always first choice for me. That avoids losing a log because of the issues you mention at the start. Not just the flat lining, but the sudden spikes too.

Not a real full on power performance, (parts are not a great deal above what a Duchess on 11 alone could do), but still very nice indeed. With lots of lovely photos here from it as well.

PS. You didn't see any Short-Eared Owls hunting as you went through the moors higher up did you? LOL! Peak daylight activity time for them around now as they feed young.

Aren't the GPS satellites an American military design? More in the east could mean they're pointing at Russia, and being able to see what speed you're doing up Shap is a happy side effect? :)

I'm actually not sure now what the status of GPS Satellites are. I, like you, think they were a Yank invention to be able to watch over us all and point missiles in the right place, (hopefully landing them there too), etc.

But my understanding is that the are now an integral part of worldwide navigation. So I presume, (ooh, that's risky), that their deployment is now based more on that rather than on being able to land a missile on the head of a specified Russian whilst she/he is having a quiet vodka whilst watching the ballet. Or playing chess, or doing whatever Russians used to do to relax after a hard day plotting to overthrow the evil capitalists in the west.

This is interesting if you want to know a bit more about how the system actually works. http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/howgpsworks.php

Thanks Ralph. Very useful, (you and the link!).

Always gives me mixed feelings thinking about GPS. My lovely late wife was the first person ever to use one to record a steam loco at 100 mph. German 18 201 in Austria on 5th May 2002. We'd gone out from Nurnberg to Wien behind 18 201 a few days earlier and she had spent the whole trip learning how to use the GPS while I timed with an electronic stopwatch. So we had established a good system to work together with. On the two 18 201 runs in Austria, (maximum of 96mph and 102mph), she stood in the corridor immediately behind me, holding the GPS hand set rigid onto the open window I was using to look out of to get mileposts times. The system was that every time I clicked my watch she shouted out the GPS speed, so I could put that in my note book next to the time from my watch. That was a wonderful few days away with a very lovely lady.

GPS satellites use polar orbits, not geostationary orbits, and so are not "grouped" anywhere, but change positions ofer time, travelling around the Earth from pole to pole. That way they can cover the whole Earth, as it spins.

And therefore, you cannot point them at Russia, but they probably spend a good deal of time there, as it's so big!

Is anyone else having a tough time getting over last weekends spectacle? Those speed charts are amazing. Talk about going to the Olympics or hitting a home run!!!

I think that a Blue King and a Princess Royal class would be a deadly combination. That is once 6201 is back and 6023 is certified. Another unusual paring.
