Does anyone have any photographs please of the interior of a BR brake van, in particular showing the paint finish inside the cabin? Alternatively any painting diagram or instructions please?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi Nick,

I think it depended partly who painted the van and when. I saw a colour picture of the inside of a van used on coal traffic on the Denby branch and that seemed to be brown all over. With all the coal dust blowing in that might have been more practical on that operation. There is a black & white picture on P.100 of "British Railways wagons" by Don Rowlands, which suggests cream walls, black brake standard and stove area, number in black letters on the inside above the guards ducket, varnished inside of door.

Thanks Tim, appreciated. I quite like the sound of cream walls with varnished inside of doors, have to see what the owners think.

My own LMR van is nearly finished with brown lower walls, stained benches, cream upper walls, white ceiling. One bench left to complete.

That second picture's a Southern one isn't it; I put one of our SR vans on the Goods Shed road for the buffer packing pieces to be done this week, I wonder if Sam fancies getting carried away... ;)

When I rubbed by BR (ballast) van down, evidence suggested grey/white (sometimes known as "stone") upper walls with red/maroon lower walls. Ceiling was white. Floor was unpainted i.e. naturally (filthy black) wood.

I don't know if yours has a table, but that level is where the join was between upper/lower.

Interesting that there was a colour for "interior wood surfaces of containers" as none of the ones I've seen show any evidence of ever having being painted internally. I suspect that any such treatment would be limited to ones designed to carry foodstuffs (but I am guessing).

Don't know about containers but I do know that the inside of BGs and guards compartments were painted BS381C Red Oxide/Freightstock Red in all areas likely to be scuffed e.g. lower walls, inside of doors and cages etc and cream above 3'6" on the walls. Later in the Rail Blue era this became Light Admiralty Grey or Rail Grey.
