Uksteam showing ECS moves for 70013 from Southall to Bristol on Saturday and returning on Monday, but motive power for WSE still showing TBC. But I guess this is a good indication that Oliver Cromwell will be on the first WSE.

The letter sent out with the tickets lists 5029/45231 as the motive power for the WSE on the 30th June.

I also add that the letter stated 8 coaches, so adding the support coach would be a little troublesome on Evershot for a Black 5?

Are you naysaying about the ability of Bert's Five to climb a hill? Maybe the WCR Diesel should go along to help out????

I'm just saying that even Tangmere or Nunney would not get over Honiton easily with 9 coaches, and Black 5s are much less powerful.

And of course I don't want a diesel. When did I say that? I was just stating the fact that I doubt that 45231 could make it over Honiton with 9 on, just as last year it was stated that 9 was probably a coach too many for Tangmere.

Since when has Honiton been between Bristol and Weymouth?

Tangers has on occasion gone over Honiton unassisted with 10-11 on with a speed restriction somewhere on the bank due to bridge clearance issues, and has done Upwey and Evershot with decent loadings with relatively few problems. At the end of the day, it also depends on how much thrash the locomotive owner is willing to put up with.

I think perhaps you are getting muddled. The serious climbs for the WSE are Melbury Bubb to Evershot tunnel, heading south, and Weymouth to Bincombe tunnel, returning north. Both are around 1-in-50 to 1-in-52. Honiton bank, on the Exeter line between Axminster and Honiton itself, is pretty stiff (around 1-in-80, IIRC?) but not as bad.

Of the WSE performances I have seen over Evershot and Bincombe the last two years, Tangmere and Ollie have had no trouble with 9 coaches (though there's always a doubt about whether either pacific could restart on damp rails). Nunney was slower than either pacific, and appeared to have less in hand, on the occassions I filmed her, but still coped with the load. Remember that Tangmere took 11, unassisted, up Bincombe a few years ago when a WCRC diesel failed. Not something you'd want to repeat every day, but shows what a skilled driver can coax from her when the need arises.

Read Mendips Enginemen, Pete Smith states that class 5's were never troubled by 9 coach trains on the Northern section of the S&D so the climb to Evershot should be no problem incidentally he also stated that the 5's handled the northern section better than the Bulleids.

    Cheers Dave

Evershot bank only has a limited sprinter service over it.It therefore is largely dependent on rail conditions for adhesion.Ive known up trains to overshoot Chetnole Stn due to the wheels picking up.
Obviously its not the leaf fall season, but a stop on the bank in the wet could prove interesting.

Nunney's a good slogger, but I don't think she's quite a match for Tangers, Ollie or The Earl. I've video'd them all with similar loads on the South Devon banks, and the only one I thought wasn't going to make it was Nunney. Maybe she's stronger since her latest overhaul - it would be great if she is.

To be fair, it shoulden't be a surprise she can't match 5043, Swindon didn't fit double chimneys and 4 row superheaters for fun, as for 70013 & 34067, your comparing basically a 1923 design to two post war types, Nunney would blow most types from that time out the water however.

Also heading over the South Devon Banks, having Mr Churchill on the regulator helps considerably.
