Ah! Just a simple job of enlarging the footplate of any engine likely to work ERTMS territory and the installation of an effective A/C unit. Presumably the external air-handler of the A/C system would fit in-gauge at the back of the tender. ;)

Oh and I forgot, those things really don't like dust and water too, and you should really only touch with clean hands and use anti static mats.

That said ive worked in a room full of about 600 of them, in the middle of the desert, surrounded by sand..and they have enough power, space, cooling and filters to keep them happy, and enough battery power for 20 minutes (that is a serious amount of battery), to allow theoretical worst case for the generators kick in,

So anything is possible, maybe with a 2nd tender.

I find it hard to believe that you need that much hardware on the loco... More like a small compartment in the tender tank, accessed from say the rear of the tender, with a heat sink perhaps even extending into the water tank and a generator running off one of the tender wheel sets to top up a smallish battery. All the problems will be with display or whatever that needs to be visible to the crew, but even then with military/marine spec kit it should all be doable and less than rocket science. All the problems will be with paying the bill for creating and testing the custom kit.

To be honest, I'd be surprised if this is anything like the final spec for ERTMS, I'd expect much smaller kit say 5 years down the line.

Given progress In This area todate, one assumes that must be the assumption of the experts too.

Unfortunately 19" server racks are here to stay as are U measured devices... With billions (literally) of devices now world wide using that standard, much like the shipping container, those dimensions are here to stay for a generation.

Wasn't the prototype APTIS machine built into a 19" rack? A bit tricky to lug around so they minaturised it - at a cost.
Far more importantly, is how much is it going to cost to minaturise this kit for a handful of locos just to satisfy a load of puffer-nutters?

Which has very little to do with turntables.

I believe the A1 Trust are planning for this longer term, so watch this (large?) space.

If Network Rail plans to introduce ERTMS over more areas of the country are implemented, especially the North Wales coast, then steam locomotives WILL need to have ERTMS fitted along with all the rest of the rolling stock liable to use the Network. Enough problems exist with the Cambrian stock rostering and availability of the ERTMS fitted Class 97s in limiting excursions to the region.

And yes, a turntable at Pwllheli or Aberystwyth would be a useful feature IF the ERTMS problem can be overcome.

Probably a lot easier to retro-fit a class 37 instead of a Manor. Mind you, would a 37 fit on Swindon's relocated 65' table? Oh, hang on...

Well, blow me down! This forum never ceases to amaze me. Thanks for that GWR4090. It does beg the question "Why would you want to turn a class 37?" but there you go. When the Swindon 'table does eventually get relocated, I just hope it goes to an appropriate location. (Didcot has Southampton's one, Swanage will be installing Old Oak Common's one, Barry will be having Bricklayers Arm's one, and so on.) Weymouth would be perfect, if it isn't the final destination of the ex-Tyseley spare. Anywhere else? Anyone think of a former GW line - preserved or NR - which would make good use of it?

Even flange wear? Or maybe the cooker wasn't working in the other end for a brew... :)
