Good idea. Steam comes on at Peterborough after about 60 min from KX including a pick up at Stevenage. Non stop to York in 1oo min - no problem for Tornado even with a 75 limit. Suddenly, York, Durham and Newcastle become possible in a day, even with two cathedral cities for the Steam Dreams customers.

Seems 44871 will not be on the 15 guinea train in August according to the works, cannot be spared from the Jacobite. Another 5 will sub. Presumably 45231.

I think part of the issue is choice of Victoria and a trip around Clapham, Kew, Acton to get to the MML .. On Saturday.

    Comparing apples to apples though...
60163 took 17 minutes longer to reach Stevenage today than 4464 did on Saturday (both 1 stop Potters Bar and 75mph sections).

    Now consider this..
60163 (today) and 4464 (on saturday) both took 39 minutes to go from Retford to Doncaster, at 75mph...

    60163 passed Retford (1014), and Doncaster (1052) 39 minutes

The only difference was after passing Retford station at walking pace (1101), 4464 then stopped in Babworth loop to take on water for 17 minutes (1103-1120) on its way to Doncaster for 1139..

I'm guessing train weight / acceleration affects the available path and hence delay, although Tornado didnt need the water, it still had to wait, either that or a very leisurely ride..

Today's Yorkshireman seems to be behind a diesel. Is Ollie out of action or is this now a fire risk?

70013 (complete with Palatine headboard) was certainly alive and well at Putney @ 6.50 this morning.

    Alan.
All Real Time Train times show as diesel, due to software issue.
See South Yorkshireman thread, with pictures of 70013, so don't be deterred from going to see it.

RTC is starting to post a few new Autumn 2013 tours on its website http://www.railwaytouring.net/uk_day_trips (Scroll down to bottom). Worcester-Sheffield Park behind 70013 on 28th Sept looks an interesting one. Also, 61306 is working to the NNR a week later and Ollie is working Westbury-Kingswear on 19th Oct. No doubt more tours will be added over the next few days/weeks.

I'd love to see another "Welsh Borderer" as per 34067's run on 4th May. A very scenic itinerary in the main, and the Worcester-Malvern-Hereford section sees very little steam. For those of us living in Gloucestershire, we do get the chance to see steam on Sapperton, but few opportunities to board a steam train from Gloucester or Cheltenham that is going that way. May saw two such trains on consecutive weekends, but I had booked on 5043's epic run on 11th May, and couldn't spare the time or money to go on the RTC trip behind 34067 a week earlier as well. However, if there's a re-run (especially if 6023 is (a) ready soon and (b) can pass through Colwall and Ledbury tunnels), I'd be very interested.

Yes John, there are a few more to come at least one of which is good for track bashers and lovers of steam!!
Maybe a few extra Kingswears' with added Kingswear Castle options.I am please personally to see RTC back at Goodrington!!!
With loco shortages and the problems of high temps it was thought advisable to hold back the announcements but the recent return of5029 and the imminent launch of34046 we can all hope for a fine Sept and autumn of steam.

I enjoyed the geological notes and Big Als' reply re the Downs as a former walker on the chalk and flints. I only look at the dates and route of many trips knowing that changes are likely ESP on GB. I always laugh at the ....."now we say a sad farewell to the majestic steam loco as we wearily return to London with a diesel......." And find the rail tour regulars all do too.

Some lovely track planned for the 1500 trip which will prob be a sell out. I missed the famous trip from Broad St....Ollie on the West Coast and the rare ish.curve(for steam) at Willesden on to the West London line should "thrill" the hard core as well as well as the link at E.Grinstead.

Btw 231k8 is ready at long last so the trip to Paris and the fantastic museum at Pithiviers(3 ng locos in steam) should finally run!

I won a cabride with my wife,Ros, Pad to Bristol and back in a competition held on the awesome VT Cheltenham Flyer.
The challenges for FGW with v old equipment and NR with huge numbers of suicides and signal failures was all too obvious and may be the cause of local caution re the use of diesel. 2 fires yesterday and a burnt out embankment on the Kingswear line that I saw earlier this week suggest that a very cautious approach is likely until heavy rain soak the SW as the PPM figs have been dire on some days and there is huge pressure from ORR Passenger groups and politicians to get back to much higher figs ESP in FGW/SWT area.

Finally,I hope we all continue to visit preserved lines and ride the mainline despite the problems in the last 10weeks and that we enjoy our HOBBY and have FUN!!!..........

All good stuff Ray. Can I ask if there is any news on the twice postponed Buxton Spa trip as three of us have seats still riding on this?

No details on the revised date for the Buxton trip yet.

The Wandering 1500 on the 5/10 is tempting. I was planning to go to the West Somerset Gala but that might change.

It is a pity the Cumbrian Expresses are on week days. Would have booked on a Saturday trip subject to it no clashing with something else.

Which of the 2 trips on the 19/10 will 70013 actually haul ?

Thanks for the further information. I was holding off booking or planning other things to do in September until I knew when the Buxton trip was. At least it does not clash with anything else ( yet!), which is what usually happens.

But that would involve 2 nights in a hotel for me. I did the Scarborough Flyer and a CME back to back last year staying in Crewe for 3 nights while the Olympics were on.

I just have to wait for the Winter Cumbrians next year and hope the loco pool is 46115 and 45699.
