Just been looking at RTT, there are some strange times on there, arrived Milford loop 13 early, and departed 3 minutes later 55 minutes ahead of time, so obviously no loco change there. Past Colton 61 up, but arrived York only 7 minute up. Changed locos at Holgate perhaps??? 2hrs later something, Galatea?, then went back to Milford...

I couldn't understand the loco change at Milford Loop, with train and steam loco progressing separately to York - I presume that it was due to platform capcity at York, which a change at Holgate would eliminate as an issue.

I presume at least one of the sidings is passed for use by passenger trains.

The loco change over on the outward leg was altered to Holgate Loop at the last minute because of a signalling problem at Milford. However the diesel loco had to use the main line to run round as all three reception roads were occupied. Later it was decided to use this location for the change over on the return leg as well, possibly for the same reason.

Thanks for that confirmation Peter, I posted that comment before the tour returned to York so did not know till later that the change on the return had been made there as well. But I wonder what went to Milford. at about 2pm?

The thing I cant understand about this tour is why was there a greater fire risk after York ( steam taken off ) as surely a fire risk is just as likely to happen between Manchester and York in the dry weather .

    You're right. It's completely arbitrary

Do we have some sort of national "fire risk" system? Some years ago I am sure there was one run by, for or at least used by DB, (German Railways). It classified predetermined geographic areas on a numerical scale of some sort. Anyone else here come across it? I am sure I am not dreaming it! I was closely involved with the Rendsburger Eisenbhanfreunde at the time and I a fairly sure it was someone in that group who told me about it during one hot spell.

Maybe that is what we are moving towards here in the UK?

Although in general terms the North West is usually reckoned to get a lot more rain than the East, which gets less and less as you head further East. So we are often told during droughts!

I would imagine it's because THIS is what it's like for most of the way, lots of tinder dry farmland.

Fair point Stuart but there is still plenty off dry stuff that can set fire between Manchester and York so I cant see the difference fire wise as a fires a fire in Network rails eyes !

There are various routes between York and Manchester if there's a fire. I wouldn't like to be the person who allows steam to go to Scarborough on the hottest weekend of the year so far, and then find the line shut for several hours due to lineside fires.
