Forgive my ignorance, but how can you compare Galatea with Braunton?
How much running had Galatea had before she was put out on the main? A few hundred yards? Maybe a mile or two at most in the yard at Carnforth?
Any running is surely better than none/very limited? And the type that has been done can certainly clear a great deal of the shakedown work required.
I agree regarding the weight and harder/prolonged acceleration of main line requirements but I think your comparison is not a fair one.

Well, they both have three cylinders, though I don't know why that's relevant in any way, but that's a comparison for you.

Galatea was just an example. False starts after overhauls or rebuilds are normal and sometimes important in ironing out minor problems. The fact that this was done extensively on the ELR doesn't mean that things shouldn't be scaled up for the main line as is happening. I'm delighted that NR has allowed this test run under the 'asssisted' umbrella. It's not the same as having the full weight of a train hanging off the back at startup etc but I'm sure that WCR is happy that NR is!

I agree entirely that things need scaling up and am happy also that it is being allowed to run.
You are absolutely correct that too many false starts have been seen in recent years but I am sure nobody expected Galatea to work perfectly out of the box first time after the scale of the work done.
Let us all hope that the test is a success and another engine can be released into the main line pool

Presmably it's all down to whether the VAB is happy with the arrangement, and since 5Z50 now appears to have departed Carnforth, one assumes that they are.

Alot of mainline registered engines have shake down test on preserved lines. WCRC doesn't seem to do this, is there a reason for this? It is a well written phrase that engine have 'running in' trials prior to being let out on the big railway.

Has anyone heard anything from 34046? There's a path today from Carnforth to Craigentinny TRSMD which has been reported 11 early at Penrith. The normal circuit has gone quiet since Carnforth and I wonder if 34046 has gone north instead? There is a return path tonight which went active a few hours ago from Craigentinny.

Interesting thought - there's no steam ban in Scotland, of course.

Taking a loco to a preserved line for 'runnng in' from Carnforth would involve several movements, by the time you have run light, say to the East Lancs you have done quite a few miles so the loco would then be ready to come back. The light test runs to Hellifield and back suffices.
