Hi Dave, can you confirm that the discrepancy in the cylinder alignment is 5" and not the 4mm stated in the SR issue 416? I am sure a 4mm error might have been possible to correct, if there had not been the other problems.

There is a misprint in the SR article. The cylinder alignment is out by 4 degrees not mm leading to the 5 inch discrepancy at the centre driving wheels.
4mm could have been corrected in the cylinder casting or even during cylinder machining.

    New Frames Ordered!!

After the discovery of the condition of the frame plates, we faced a difficult position. We were staring down the barrel as we had insufficient funding to order new plates given the commitments made with regard to the frame stretcher orders.
Victory from the Jaws of Defeat.
However, a member has come to our rescue with a magnificent donation to cover the cost of manufacture of new plates. It is hoped that these will be cut and machined during October.
This coupled to the resounding vote of confidence passed in the Council of Management at the annual general meeting held in Swindon have given us the determination to carry on with the project until we reach our goal of a successful, working, mainline registered locomotive.
Please keep coming back to our website for progress reports. Other parts are currently being manufactured and first news of completed parts will be featured here.
Teamwork – together we can achieve the extraordinary.

Tremendous news Dave, with commitment like this the project will go far. I look forward to seeing more progress news in the future.

    Thanks Bulleid and Pesmo.
We have a lot of news to come in the next few weeks and the pace has definitely picked up considerably. A group of us completed the second visit to Shillingstone and moved the majority of the remaining parts to the midlands. One more trip is required to fetch some remaining cabinets and storage tubs and then we will sell the 40' container. Regular working parties will commence shortly at our Midlands base (members only please as its a private site and for insurance purposes).
As always if anyone wants to lend a hand they are more than welcome and anyone wishing to become a member please visit our website at http://www.72010-hengist.org/membership and download the membership forms.

    Some more great news!
We are pleased to report that the casting of the rear combined stretcher / brake cylinder support has now been ordered from Norton Cast Products.
This stretcher has been kindly financed by project engineer Geoff Turner and is expected to be cast in the next 4 to 6 weeks depending on the foundry schedule.
This casting is affectionately known as the 'bread tray' within the project!

Excellent news Dave - how many stretchers will that make, and how many more are still required please?

Off the top of my head the only remaining stretchers are a fabricated vertical stretcher and two combined stretcher / spring hangars (one of which is awaiting casting). After that its the exhaust steam spider which is welded into the smokebox saddle.

After the QA & design issues with the frame plates what is the provenance and quality of the other components that have been made so far? Is there going to be a procession of bits going in the bin?

    Thanks for your question!
All of the components made prior to the combined frame stretchers have all been inherited by the current team that took over 2 years ago. In terms of quality, mainline certification will require that all parts that are pressure bearing or safety critical will need appropriate documentation. This would be the case had the parts been inherited or newly made. We have some documentation for some of the inherited parts but not all of them and one of our main jobs currently is to go through all of the parts (mostly unlabelled although some have cast in drawings numbers) and test where appropriate. This testing will mostly consist of hardness and PMI testing which takes a couple of minutes per component and have a minimal cost. The dimensional checks we will complete ourselves as there are no more large components that have already been machined. We have the necessary QA procedures in place to ensure no repeat of the frames' issues with any new components.

Working parties to our Midlands site are being organised for members who wish to don overalls for a day and help the inventory process (tea and biccies provided!).

As with all projects of this size, the more people that can lend a hand (physically, financially or both) the sooner the locomotive will be built and running on the mainline.

Teamwork - together we can achieve the extraordinary

Interesting fact : 72005 Clan Mac Gregor was cut up 48 years ago today (31/7/1965) at Arnott Young in Troon. The 6th Clan to be disposed of having spent her short working life of 13 years at Carlisle Kingmoor (68A). We are filling the gap with a new Clan 'Hengist'.

2nd Combined Stretcher / Spring Hanger Bracket Ordered

We are delighted to report that the second combined stretcher / spring hanger bracket has been ordered from Norton Cast Products in Sheffield. This combined stretcher is twice the size of the first with 4 'legs' rather than the 2 on the previous casting. All in this casting will weight over 500kg.
This represents the first time one of these stretchers has been cast since the 1950s when 71000 'Duke of Gloucester' had her stretchers cast.
It is expected that this stretcher will be cast in 6 to 8 weeks.
    Frame Assembly appeal

We are starting an appeal for the frame assembly costs. We have the funds available for the components and some of the assembly already thanks to the funding of the frames by a members and some very generous donations at the AGM. If we raise enough funds to more than cover the assembly of the frames the remainder will go towards the bogie and pony truck assemblies.
Please consider donating even if only a few pounds, we rely on our supporters generosity to fund this build and the more funds we raise the quicker the loco will be built.
You can make a donation by using the 'Make a donation' area on the front page of our website.
    Many thanks.

Are the new frame plates goung to be the nearest metric equivalent (32mm) ie slightly over , i think the nearest under is 30mm ( e.g tornado) Promises to be a very solid chassis if so... wonder wether the improved frame stretcher provision would allow slightly thinner plates ?

I believe the frames are to be cut from 32mm plate. We're counting down to the cutting now although this has to coincide with the delivery of the horn guides so the cutting, welding and machining can be completed as one job. As always pictures and video will be published to the website.
Some more exciting news to report on Friday!

Mustnt forget to machine everything down by a tad ( about 10 thou) extra either inside or outside then,
Bet GA can barely sit still for thinking about all that welding...

Balanced welding procedures have been agreed on the horn guides as well as leaving the supports and risers from the casting process intact. The supports will be removed in the machining phase after they have been welded in situ. Extra 'green' is also being added to the horn guides when they are cast including the weld prep areas which were found to have been previously cast at finished sizes rather than leaving a machining allowance.
The frames will only be profiled and pilot drilled during the machining phase with the main drilling being completed at assembly time to ensure everything is correct.

So much progress being made !

    New Horn Guides Ordered!

The new horn guides have now been ordered! 6 are being cast at Norton Cast Products in Sheffield out of grade A4 steel. These will then be delivered to Stephenson engineering to coincide with the completion of the frame plates to be welded into place.
The horn guides also have the stop bosses and lubrication ports included in the casting. The risers formed as part of the casting process will be left in tact (along with some cross webbing) to strengthen the castings during welding and minimise warping during cooling. These will then be machined out as part of the overall frame machining process.

Great news Dave, onwards and upwards as they say. You might want to edit the text size in your post though - almost needed my magnifying glass for that ;)
