Well I'm assuming UKSteam have made a mistake. It lists 34046 moving from Dereham on Tuesday but no movement there. I assume they mean 46233.

Anyway great to see 34046 on the mainline finally and hopefully she'll follow in the footsteps of her sisters 34027 and 34046 on the big railway.

Ah just noticed my mistake and Buseng is right I did mean 34016 during her spell. I was meaning the rebuilt Bulleids but its nice to have 3 Bulleids on the mainline now and can't wait for a 34046/34067 double header.

No chance, West Coast are not going to hire a loco when they have their own available.

From looking at videos of her loaded test runs, does anyone know why is there a loud constant hissing noise? I haven't heard it on any videos from the WSR of ELR, just on the mainline?!

Doubt it, that would not be a constant hissing and when travelling would but only making the occassional 'chuff' to keep the pressure up.

Haven't heard the hiss in question so must view the clips again but the only noise I've noticed from 34081's genny is the high pitched whine it makes when it's running.

In view of the long gestation period leading up to the arrival of Braunton back on the main line I've not tempted fate by reminding myself of when I last travelled behind her on the main line. But as her welcome return draws near, I've now taken the plunge. In view of the fact that she was a 71B loco I expected a long search since decent runs behind steam tended not to come from Bournemouth drivers with the same frequency as Nine Elms so my trips were a little biased towards London based locos and/or crews.

Anyway, she last turned up for me on one of the more bizarre turns on the SWML - the last up fast Bournemouth (1928 from Bournemouth West) that ran in the summer and was due in to Waterloo at 2140. Bizarre, because it was, I think, the only 2 hour service without refreshment facilities...and it was always very lightly loaded. As a result, the crews didn't have to work too hard, they could play with the train, or not, and the latter was usually the case.

So, despite two signal checks and a TSR, with a load of only 4 coaches, the train was timed to Surbiton where we got stuck behind a stopper and took 20 minutes into the terminus, arriving five late.

One thing is for certain - short trains will not be on the agenda any more and it will be great to see a rebuilt Light Pacific on the ML again. Bodmin and Taw Valley are too distant a memory. It will be interesting for DBS crews to compare and contrast Braunton with Clan Line if she gets on the Torbay Ex. They will notice a difference...but not much I suspect.

How I envy all you chaps who got to travel by Steam when it was in regular service...What I wouldn't give to see that now, or wander around Nine Elms in its prime...I'm hoping 34046 will make some appearances down my way on the Royal Dutchy...

When there was nothing else we didn't give it much thought, it was normal everyday life. You've only got to look at the "Hudderfield Gas Works" thread to see the kids playing in the street and ignoring the little steam train trundling down the middle of the street. When we were young train spotters we did used to cycle to our favourite spots/sheds etc, but not all were train spotters. For me trespassing:rolleyes: in the sheds at Leeds (and Mirfield and Hillhouses) was living. Copley Hill, Neville Hill (most difficult) and Holbeck (easiest). I don't know why but I always seemed to end up with a boot up my backside "OUT yer little bugga":D Part and parcel of growing up in the age of steam.

Same here. An all day London bus 'rover' ticket for a modest sum that took you to as many steam sheds as you could get into. My typical list was Willesden, Neasden, Cricklewood, Oak Oak Common, Kings Cross, Nine Elms, Stewarts Lane. Some were more straightforward than others and no matter how responsibly you behaved there were a few foreman who understandably didn't want you around. Top Shed (KX) was the hardest, partly because of its very open approach. Busy, cramped, very steamy...but quite an adventure. Not something to talk to your parents about though!!
