If I type what I want to say I dont think the Mods would be too impressed......

Well we try to explain how it is on the national railway...give the views on our side of the fence....

Oh Busend everyone is allowed an opinion and a view...we are just giving ourside....

Yes decisions are made that with the benifit of hindsight are probably wrong.
Ok....You are in Control, allow a kettle to run by herself and a lineside fire is started. (Down here in Dorset there is a strong drying wind). So how would YOU explain to the higher management that YOU made a decision to run a kettle by itself even though the "steam ban" had not been lifted.

Over to you...an obvious expert of train running

    Moderators warning on this thread

Enough of the bickering , what's done is done , there were reasons , there was a sequence of events whether rightly or wrongly that took place and no amount of spleen venting on a forum will make it better

Personally speaking If you travel 100 miles to take a photograph then I have no sympathy . It is a risk we all take that circumstances will conspire against us . I feel sorry for the passengers who are enjoying/enduring crompton thrash as opposed to some Castle music

Hope the Castle gets on the front for the return at least

Just had a thought, and perhaps I'm trying to calm down the mood, of some, on this thread.
But could 5944 please take a photograph of his two-tone long grass and send it to HNRC at Barrowhill.
Then perhaps Harry Needle may use it as the next livery scheme on a Class 08 or 09. Therefore putting in place a physical memorial of this day:D.
Just a thought. Or shall I just go back to my glass of Black Grouse:cool: .

And I think in hindsight with this strong warm wind blowing (and no rain) its probably the right decision, albeit a close one but not worth the risk in burning a farmers crop.

I would have been a safe option to rely on the diesel for motive power on the way back I guess.

    Meanwhile, back at the train...
According to RTT, Nunney Castle left Yeovil Junction 12 early at 1458. A right-time departure from Weymouth is possible, at least.

Nice to have left 5029s support coach on the train for extra load. Good few heads out, enjoying the Sulzer Symphony as well!

All these assumptions and guesses are being made, but someone at NR has to make a decision and stand by it. Nobody who is/was out there has the overall picture so cannot make a true decision, so just lets drop it now and stick to facts.

Love the bickering from people neither in the south west nor on the train. A decision was made to stick the diesel on the back. At the last second somebody disagreed with this and insisted the 33 was stuck up front - either as pilot or train loco I know not - and the result is we've had a diesel hauled tour to Weymouth along with all the delays this last second change has involved. The 33 is now coupled inside and it remains to be seen how much work the it will do on the way back. And by the way it's pissing down now.

Probably the wrong sort of rain for Network Rail.

Diesel tour departed Weymouth on time. <BJ>

Travelling through a downpour but no matter how hard 5029 works, the 33 works harder.

What is the point of doing it that way round ?
West Coast should have more sense than putting the 33 on front.
Glad I saw Nunney Castle on the Torbay Express the other week with the Brush 4 behind the Castle.
Not much more that I can say other than lets hope steam returns to Reading SOON PLEASE Net Work Rail !
The West Country is a long way to go to see Mainline GWR steam in action.

I'll be glad to see a steam charter without any diesel at all. Ah, those were the days!! <BJ>

The downpour continues as does the diesel assistance.
