Is it a safe bet that 5305 will remain in K&WV during the Winter? This year 2013 60009 did all of the trips and wasn't that because all 6 12 car trains sold out? They were sold out.

You know, it is probably too early because motive power changes can and do happen so to say that no9 shall do all of the runs it's too early to say.

I would think that 70013 would have a shorter maintenance period this coming winter. Can anyone else chime in?

Although I have not travelled behind 46115, having it on the Glagow - FW did not appeal to me. I would like to travel on the West Highlander again behind 61994 (I was on the one before Oban was added to the itinerary).

There is one listed for the 3rd May next year - go to booking form and select a tour, you will see it as one of the tours still to be added to the website.

But for most people who don't have a 3G phone, then what? They DO have to print them.

Actually, a 3G phone is not essential for email. Provided you have a phone that's GPRS compatible, common since the early noughties, you should be able to receive email no problem.

Isn't there a sort of unofficial steam ban over the S&C in the autumn? Bit surprised to see two tours in October.

Can take a blooming long while to download though if it has large files attached.

Quite right, though an E ticket shouldn't need to be a large file, and wouldn't take long to download on a 2G phone. In fact, it should be possible to produce one in SMS format I would have thought ?

Me too Paul and the one one where it had to rescue the train. A unique occasion, never to be repeated

Yes - very rare. That was probably the one and only time you'll get a K4 to Oban. My photo of her at Oban is currently on EBay for £50......not!

Old people and technology..... One benefit of e-tickets is that you get a instant (ish) conformation, none of this old fangled nonsense of waiting for the Royal Mail to deliver tickets or not. I presume they use some form of booking reference, so at least then you don't have to print the tickets out? I cant remember the last time I printed an airline e-ticket out, if you can get to the US and back on a 6 figure reference number I am pretty sure you can go and sit in some scabby old Mk 1 for a day with one!

Heh, old people. I, the one who first complained, am 16, and so you can guess I'm more tech-wise than a fair few. I'm just concerned for others. Unlike some people 'round here...

Me too, which is why I support moves to embrace technology and make life easier for all of us. As Desiro says, the key to travel need be no more than sight of a reference number received via text or email. Are we really saying that is beyond the great and the good of NP ?

The implication that old people are uncomfortable with technology is an ignorant generalisation. It is as stupid as alleging that young people are inarticulate, incompetent morons. Of course, some are!

But not me, I hope :p but still, I prefer tickets, they add to the occasion.

The other annoying assumption is 'get the ticket on your phone' but maybe surprisingly there are those of us who don't have or need a smartphone. Why? it's easy, we can run our lives without, a mobile that we can use to call or text is enough and a damn sight cheaper, I'm very comfortable with technology but only use it if there is no other way.
Yesterday I travelled by service train from Saltburn to Man Picc and there were the 'friends' who got on either train, sat together, then spent most of their journey engrossed in their phone, never speaking to their friend. Their lives have been taken over by technology and it would appear that the ability to interract vocally is not the top of their list.

But technology and smart phones play their part. How many times have you been on a tour that's running late and need to know the best connection home. Easy open National Rail Enquiries app and find out or use real time trains to find out where a tour is. Once you have a smart phone you will wonder how you survived without one.

In answer to your questions, 0 and 0. And I don't think it'd make much difference to your "survival"

Exactly, you don't have to allow a smartphone to change your lifestyle, just enhance it, which in many ways they do so well. If the technology allows promoters to reduce the costs for running tours, surely we should embrace it ? Also, as I've said already, a "smartphone" is not essential to receive an "e ticket" Many non-smartphones can do this already. Why not take advantage ?

For the record by the way, given we all use this forum, I wouldn't call any of us as "techphobes" !
