Lucky there was no serious damage that was a very bad slip.

That's worn the tyres down nicely...

Strange, it took the driver ten seconds to close a partly opened regulator.

Of course the experts would never have allowed that to happen, the driver, probably with only a 'few' years experience needs some advice and guidance from you.

Irony noted Ralph. But I know one loco owner who would have had more than a word to say about that kind of slip. After all, that's what the steam chest pressure guage is for.

Maybe he thought the slip was from the loco behind? You would hear the noise I guess but would the shaking feel the same from the loco behind or am I talking tripe?

My photograph from Ais Gill of the returning Black 5's, with more photos of No. 70013 on the Northbound and an appearance from No. 46115 on the website here :

The last 1T57 recreation I was on the footplate of 45407, so was a treat to see this from the lineside this year. Maybe the 50th will prove even more accurate? ( And maybe some sun! )

When I had a footplate ride on 850 at the MHR earlier this year, there was one (fairly substantial) slip just as we left Alresford - if I'm honest, I barely noticed it at all until I looked back at my video! The only real clues were the change in the exhaust sound and the fire becoming slightly brighter as the slip began.

Did manage to get up to Settle and also got some lovely pics too of all the steam locos, and a class 66 with freight too passing southbound, but its such a shame that more runs up there is not carried out, due to the poor train services on a Sunday.

Just curious, but could someone better informed than me,explain exactly what damage this kind of slip can cause. Of course I have read of the notorious Blue Peter incident but surely the thing about that was the great speed of the wheels. In this video the wheels are going slower than if the loco was running at full speed,so other than the wear on the tyres are there other implications? Thanks

Possible bending of a coupling rod as one set of wheels grips the rails sooner than another set.

    Cheers

Yes, exactly that issue. Sadly, near the end of steam in the 60's, one of the Merchant Navy class suffered that fate after, allegedly, sanders were applied at speed to control a slip with all the disastrous consequences of differential grip

If you look closely at the video you will see the regulator has jammed, you can clearly see the driver 'pumping' the handle trying to close it. Then, if you look at the valve gear you can see that the driver is winding it toward mid-gear, you can clearly see the lifting arm moving the radius rod radius rod upwards. Some quick thinking there on the part of the driver - I don't know his name unfortunately. Top job.

I don't think it would serve any purpose to identify the driver.

Why not? He deserves congratulations for thinking so quickly. He wound it into mid-gear very quickly. The regulator was totally jammed. Top man whoever he is.

Yes, I'd noticed that the driver appeared to be struggling to close the regulator, but I'm no expert and I hadn't noticed the valve gear. The driver looks like Ron Smith, by the way. I thought he was on 44932 at Carlisle and Gordon Hodgson was on 45231 - maybe they had swapped locos.

Top man!! At least *you* noticed, well done. More than we can say for the rest of them on here...condemning the driver, yet all the evidence was before them "live", as is it where, on video!!
And you wonder why no professionals bother with with this site.....

44713 I made my previous post before I read yours regarding his actions, while accusations were flying around, now his actions have been closely noted then yes he deserves a mention.
