See post no.32 in the "Brighton Atlantic" thread. When the original offer for the boiler was made, I believe the plan was for a GC 0-6-0, but at some point this became a 4-4-0. Either way, neither appears to have made much practical progress, though I understand that they have become quite practiced at re-launches!

    An update:
The M&GN boiler has now been bought by a preservationist in the North of England. The ex GER smokebox has been retained by Mangapps and will feature in a future museum display.

    Follow this link .
They will build a boiler with round top fire box as in the original locomotives.
I wonder what plans the new owner has for the M&GN boiler has ?

    The boiler is a midland G6 as fitted to the 2F 0-6-0 s as well as a few M&GN class C 4-4-0s .
I don't know which other MR locos had the G6 boiler .

Right there it is then, Midland 2F to be built at Butterley. Would be project that ticks a lot of the right boxes.

Glad to see this boiler is saved for a good future project. Just read about it in HR mag.

It would indeed. They could be found everywhere on the Midland network, and were very long lived.

The important thing is, of course, that the boiler is now safe.

I wonder if the clues were in the HR article - it is apparently a Jinty boiler and has been bought by "an experienced loco restorer in the North of England". This suggests to me that it might be a spare boiler for a Jinty owner......

Depends where you live as to what is north or south. The Midland Railway Society at Butterley have a theoretical four but, although north of the 'Gap, they are south of me.

However a certain Mr Riley has one.....

Naa cant see either of those buying it.

On a note of the what could u use it for, there is the Johnson midland 0-6-0 tender engine, the m&gn 4-4-0 c class and a jinty? Any more?

Jinty boilers are G5-1/2. Is this boiler a G6?

Maybe it was bought as a spare Jinty boiler for another Jinty perhaps ??

Well, what's certain is that you can only use it for one of those at a time...so take your pick!;)

Not my choice to choose what they do with the boiler.

But if it was it would be one of these Willesden_Locomotive_Depot_ex-Midland_2F_0-6-0_geograph-2805411-by-Ben-Brooksbank.jpeg

I think "Jinty" boilers are shorter in the barrel but of greater diameter as they had to fit a bunker onto the same chassis, and they're for a class 3 rather than a class 2 (although power also depends a lot on the cylinders)

The only difference in the boilers is that the G6 firebox is 5" longer.

That's correct. The original identification was based on the fact that it looked like the Jinty boiler that was then stood in the yard at Tunbridge Wells. When it was measured it was 5" longer, but otherwise identical to a Jinty.
