Just got back from my first 'proper' visit to this line. Managed to spend some of Friday and all of Saturday at the gala, both riding on the trains and lineside. Thoroughly enjoyed it all, just wish it wasn't so far away for me!! Big thanks to everyone involved.
Just one minor gripe - the two blokes in high viz-vests, presumably official permit holders, who popped up lineside right in front of the crowded gallery in the field near the roadbridge on the A149, to pretty much ruin everyone's shot of the approaching Black 5. I appreciate permit holders have a right to be lineside, there wouldn't be much point of having a permit otherwise, but a little consideration for others close by would be appreciated.

I had a really good time on Friday at my first proper visit to the NNR. Lovely countryside - nice walks from all the stations, but especially Weybourne (in all directions). The gala services were varied and interesting. I was walking through the woods by the Kelling Heath Halt when Oliver Cromwell came past (with Black 5 banking) up the grade, and it was incredibly impressive! The B12 and N2 were both very beautifully turned out and looked great with the Quad-Arts. The 56XX seemed to be making strange noises, but I have never seen one before (other than my granddad’s TT scale one!) and maybe those are the noises they make! The Standard 4 was splendid - I was waiting at Weybourne when it came through non-stop, and the sound of it storming into the station (before shutting off to coast through) was superb.
One thing I was wondering, though, was whether there was permission for all of the photographers who had stationed themselves in the cornfield by Weybourne station? Of course, if the NNR has permission (or at least acquiescence) from the farmer, that’s fine. But those I spoke to didn’t seem to know – and yet still were determined to set themselves up there for the best shot. I think this is a rather selfish attitude – preserved railways need all the local support they can get, and keeping their neighbours happy must be a top priority, not people’s photographs. However, perhaps this was all OK with the farmer.
While I am moaning, I was also slightly disappointed on my way to Sheringham by the way the enthusiast contingent at Norwich station (yes, there is no mistaking them!) were so determined to get good seats on the (crowded) late morning service that they made it difficult for ‘normal’ passengers to get off and on the train. Surely this is not the best advert for rail travel, the hobby, or the NNR?

All was ok with the farmer I spoke to in the afternoon in a field just off the A149. He seemed quite pleased that I wanted to incorporate his tractor and hay bales in a shot of a passing train.
Providing everyone is sensible and there is no damage done to the crops, or litter left behind, then a friendly attitude of mutual help and cooperation will continue, hopefully.
A lot of gala enthusiasts stay in the area for the weekend and any spending that brings will also add a welcome boost to the local tourism economy that also needs all the help it can get - not just the railway. I found that pretty much all of the people I came into contact with over the weekend in the Sheringham area were very friendly, including railway people, locals and farmers.
On the other point you make, why shouldn't the 'enthusiast contingent' be classed as 'normal' passengers?

That sounds good - I am sure the NNR strives to have good relations with neighbours. I was just a bit shocked that a couple of people I spoke to (visiting photographers, not NNR people) seemed perfectly happy to wander across someone else's field without checking it was OK first. Great if in this case that was fine - but surely we should always check? Not every farmer beside a railway would be so delighted (even if there wasn't any actual damage). I'm all for the right to roam...
As to enthusiasts not being 'normal', let's not go there... Of course they/we are fare paying passengers like everyone else.
I guess in both instances I was just not as impressed as I might be with the courtesy of some of the enthusiast visitors - and I think a hobby with a slightly negative public image could perhaps do with all the courtesy it can get! Especially if any of the general public associate discourtesy with the preserved railway. I have occasionally heard mutterings in some places where there are preserved railways about "foreigners" coming to see the railway - traffic, noise, trespassing, etc.
However - this was a VERY minor gripe from me. My visit to the NNR was otherwise delightful - everyone from the NNR, visitors and enthusiasts I met were extremely pleasant.

A little late but thought I would add my thoughts and shots from the Friday of the gala. Travelling up in the morning I was disappointed Tornado was not going to attend but the day was still highly enjoyable. 76084 was my favourite by a long shot and sounded incredible when double heading with 70013 from Sheringham to Holt. Well done to the NNR for also turning out D6732 in place of 60163, I thought it fitted in well with the steam gala in its new BR green livery.

Special thanks also goes to James (?) at Weybourne station. I had to be on the 18:55 Sheringham to Norwich service in order to pick up the 20:00 service to London to get me home as I had booked this train. The N2 however, had problems on the 17:45 Holt to Sheringham train meaning I missed the 18:55. James rung up Holt to see the how long it was going to take, went round the mess room to see if anyone was going to Sheringham and wrote on my NR ticket to give my story some credablity on the journey home which was very much appreciated. The station staff at Sheringham could have been a little more helpful but I only got home an hour late without having to pay for an extra ticket. My thanks to all involved with running the gala.

My shots can be seen by clicking the link below the preview of 76084 and 70013 double heading outside Weybourne:

I must congratulate the NNR on putting on such a fine show. I attended Saturday and with almost wall to wall sunshine it was a pleasure to see so many train movements crammed into the day. There was genuine efforts made to stick to the timetable but it did drift a bit towards close of play caused by a lack of steam with 5619 I believe (clinker build up in the fire??) but it wasn't too big a delay. I travelled on board the trains between Weybourne and Sheringham and boy were the trains crammed. I hope the railway made up for the disappointment of the "Standards Gala" earlier in the year. I shall certainly look forward to my next visit.
