Another marathon for the train crew and stewards. The job they do is definitely not a sinecure. Five hours in Cardiff does make for a decent time at the destination though. Interesting that this trip uses the early morning path out of Wloo down the main. Goodness knows how long the day would have been were it to have been routed via Staines.

Strewth Al, have you looked at those times to Salisbury. Down the "quick" route? Coming back isn't much better. I can't see any water stops on those bits? Only Andover - Salisbury looks any good.

Even if the Bournemouth gnomes had got that route all the way to Salisbury in the 1960s they'd have done it faster, even with stops to pick mushrooms or to go and sit on lineside toadstools: which is what many of us felt they used to do on the 21.20 ex Waterloo!

But I am sure todays crews will do all they can to make a day of it for all on board. I imagine lots of nice noise pulling away from checks.

Bryan. I think there's a water stop hidden in there at Winchfield. Otherwise you could walk down the slow line between Woking and Basingstoke. Why take a train?!

Interesting 'passing' around Bathampton Junction then....

PS, all charters get crap slow timings, not just the ones that set fire to the line side!

Bryan, I believe 60163 will be following the local stopper to Basingstoke from Woking. At Farnborough, the two trains are only 4 minutes apart.

The return also looks to be behind a stopping service, which stops at Hook, Winchfield, Fleet and Farnborough with 60163 just a few minutes behind.

Thanks James. Now if Tornado made all those station stops too, there could be a good run Woking - Basing and return! Had some damn noisy runs over that stretch on the 17.09 and 17.41 ex Waterloo, (quite heavy trains). And some very fast ones the other way on the 07.05 ex Basing and another one I think ran in the evenings. Just 4 or 5 cars and all stations except Brookwood both ways.

Don't get too excited about this one. If today is anything to go by it will have a diesel stuck on the front.
By the way the word diesel wasn't my choice, the forum seems to change post wording when you actually submit the post. Why does that happen, it wasn't nothing rude or swearing.

The diesel today was because of the LNE steam ban. Waterloo to Cardiff goes nowhere near the ECML. So be an optimist and expect it have Tornado solo, as do I.

It's almost like some people actually want things to go wrong, so they have something to moan about. Funny old world.

OK, lets re-phrase it. Why was "it" in front of Tornado & not behind it or even better at the rear of the train.

I could be wrong, but I suspect that, unlike WCR, DBS will require the diesel to be on the front if it is providing the power and 60163 is just in "light steam".

Strange it only happened to you, anyway it's back to diesel now.

I think you will find that Network Rail requires a diesel to be at the front of the train if it is providing the main source of power, as today on the ECML. When it is there to assist - e.g. at starts and on hills etc - (i.e. the WCR trip to Weymouth) then I think you can get away with it at the back.

Yes, I realise that, but, in my mind at least, there is a different between "at the front" and "on the front". What I was saying is that I suspect that when both locos are at the front of the train, DBS may require the diesel to be on the front (i.e. leading, with the steam loco immediately behind), but WCR seem OK to run with the steam loco leading and the diesel immediately behinf (and, presumably, NR are OK with this as well as most of this year's Scarborough Spa Expresses have run in this mode with the diesel providing the power and the steam loco "carrying the lamps").

D1015 looks like it passes 60163 around there for the photters, pity it's not 6024 but can't have everything.

Except of course when it pushes it all the way both there and back, as it has undeniably done several times this year...

It would be nice if there was a measure of consistency between regions when it comes to motive power rules.

Just spotted this by the times on uksteam:
    http://www.uksteam.info/tours/t13/t0907c.htm

I would point out though that the ECS to Canton is shown as 60163, but the turning (via Ninian Park and Cadoxton) is 60009. That would be rather nice having both here, but I feel it's unlikely as 60009 should be up near Carlisle around then.
