What's surprising with that is how much more looping there is on a Saturday than a Friday, on the outward trip, the stops in excess of 10 mins seem to be for watering/servicing, but plenty of pathing only ones on Saturday.

Much as I'd like to do steam properly over Beattock as opposed to a 47 shove, the prospect of a repeat few hours combined in loops at Lockerbie, Beattock and Abington puts me off somewhat, fair enough looping happens, but seems more frequent and for longer periods on the WCML north of Carlisle.

Fair point Ralph and I agree that on the day consideration may change matters BUT creating a timetable some months in advance and including steam paths in that deliberation does cause some difficulties. I well recall a Duchess run which was to be looped at Grayrigg to allow a Bristol - Glasgow service to pass. The service was late and the Duchess was offered the chance to run direct Carnforth - Carlisle after watering - and the driver took it with both hands. Suffice to say that a famous photographer who arrived at Beckfoot to catch the Duchess leaving Grayrigg Loop arrived 10 minutes after the Duchess had passed !

In the current case I suspect a call at Penrith for water had been taken at some time in the past and for various reasons has been incorporated into later schedules for no obvious reason.

Left Carnforth 10.27 and arrived Penrith 7 minutes early, so someone made the right decision that she need not stop, thus running 17 minutes early, and Carlisle 22 early....
