At the moment the line is closed by a derailment and track damage they are hoping to re-rail the nuclear flask truck today

The conductor on the Barrow train this evening said the line has now reopened.

Thanks Matt, strange how D1015 isn't mentioned.

Was originally down for the Duff but VT later subbed the Western for it, the site concerned hasn't been updated to reflect this.

Strange to reflect that, as kids in 1962 (before I started my railway career, I would add) when the Westerns arrived, us steam fans were at our wits ends with this modern traction and we would regularly discuss ways in which we could sabotage the locomotive on shed booked to take out a scheduled service. At Taunton there was a large blackboard in the roundhouse clearly showing all of the allocated duties for the day. The 0850 Taunton to Paddington via Bristol was regularly diesel hauled by this time, normally by a Warship, and we would wonder if by damaging its wipers, emptying its oil tanks, pouring paint over the windscreen etc the diesel would be rendered a failure a steam loco would replace it. Such was the passion in the diesel versus steam world of that time.

Alas, we never had the bottle to do any of this, and the diesel takeover post 1962 carried on relentlessly. Just imagine that if we had been caught, yes 6874 Haughton Grange may have been on the 0850 that day, but my railway career as a signalman would never have started and I may have finished up stacking shelves at Tesco!

Now, in later life, I have the dignity of wishing (okay, through gritted teeth), a very successful trip behind the Western.

Saturday afternoon I was on Carlisle station, having just seen Western Champion running round it's train, when I saw this very smartly dressed gentleman and stunning lady walking along the platform towards me, I did a double take as I seemed to recongise the face but this did not fit with the attire.
Hi Ben, sorry I did not recognise you as you were not wearing your chefs whites......;)

Sorry, but the idea of Ben being "smartly dressed" does not compute.:) However his being in the company of a "stunning lady" makes me intensely jealous.
I'll be paying a visit to TYS on Wednesday and rest assured I'll make extensive enquiries as to the identity of the "stunning lady."

Well he was wearing a long jacket/coat, silk scarf etc.. and looking very suave, so that's why it did not compute with the either...

Im sorry if im high-jacking this thread but would just like to ask Kevin or Ben about this rule that you have to sit down when leaving Tyseley. Is it a directive from somewhere..Health and Safety or something or is it a Vintage Trains rule??

Is it intended to drag the green dead weight to Paignton too, and run it round with the Western?
No issue with it being on the back to provide ETH, but little heat provided on Saturday and putting it on the inside of 1015 resulted in it being heard when turned on and a coach further away(less noise) from the attraction on the front.

It's presence or not will dictate whether I book on further tours with VT.

I believe it's a rule laid down by NR that everyone remains seated as the train departs and arrives back at Tyseley. Sorry I can't go further than that as it's something I've never really delved into. When I go in tomorrow I'll ask about it.

I'd be interested in the official answer too, I suspect it's probably some less than brilliant track before accessing the mainline, but would be nice to know for sure.

Ditto. At the speed that you leave and enter Tyseley, I can't really see it making much difference whether you are standing or sitting. I suppose if you are standing and the train derails there's a chance you may fall over with the sudden jolt, but if there is more than a very remote chance of derailment due to poor trackwork, should a passenger train be using it anyway?

It's not unusual to have track in yards that isn't up to the usual mainline standard if it's unlikely a passenger train will go anywhere near it, 15-20 years ago, I doubt anyone would of predicted regular passenger movements, perhaps VT were offered this take it or leave it compromise ?, all just guesswork on my part.

As you say, at 5MPH, damage/injury would be minimal, even more so if seated.
