Excellent marketing ploy to get you to visit one off the several other galas around the country this weekend who don't charge for a roster!

Maybe not, but to the average punter, that's probably the conclusion they will draw.

To my eyes, there wasn't. The S160 has been at the Moors all Summer, so it's not a visitor to the Gala.

As a steam railway.... as opposed to what...a vistor attraction ?
Could this big new potash mine not send all its product out via a spur onto the nymr and thence to middlesborough ?

Interesting thought, but the new mine will be quite a long way from the NYMR and the tonnages of material they have been talking about would leave little or no room for passenger services. Add to that the need to relay the line to take 25T axle loading wagons and I think we're talking annihilation of the NYMR as we know it. Not my favoured option! Construction of the mine has been delayed for further consultations/negotiations in any event, and their favoured option for the transport of the mined product is a pipeline to Teesside. If the the mine does go ahead, though, one of the conditions for its opening is likely to be that they pay a substantial sum each year into a community fund, so the NYMR would be well advised to get on good terms with them!

Getting back to the galas, I think the railway are trying to do the best they can with what is available. Bear in mind that it has been through several difficult years and is having to watch its spending very carefully and it is questionable whether bringing in visiting engines is cost effective. It has also been explained on here ad nauseam that it is very difficult to provide accurate rosters in advance, and there is the added problem of finding suitable visiting engines that are both capable of performing reliably and available. When it comes to advertising, the problem, I feel is that the adverts are placed by people who have little understanding of what they are writing about (i.e. they are not enthusiasts) and do not take, or are not given, advice from higher management, who ought to know.

But, does it all really matter? Turn up at the NYMR this weekend and they'll put on as good a show as they are able to and if you are on the lineside and you're not sure what is going to come past next, that's just how it once was on BR. Enter into the spirit of it! Rather than moaning, be grateful that there's a railway through the heart of North Yorkshire at all - it could so easily have been lost and what would you have photographed then?

Very well put 61264. My previous posts perhaps read a bit negative, but they were literally in reply to previous posts. I have to agree that visiting engines aren't essential and what several have said that the "put out everything that will run" approach is fine for a gala. What appears to be the case at this years ASG, there hasn't been much that can be put out to run and I appreciate that the Moors have been through a difficult time regarding this.

Getting back to the LNER gala, I'm surprised how little talk there has been on having two LNER operational Pacifics, together, both in BR blue - a very tempting draw if ever there was one IMHO. Combined with the B1 and others, despite being down on loco numbers in general, I'm anticipating a good weekend on the Moors.

I think people have become spoilt by the number of visiting locos at galas over the years. There was a time when a gala was just the home fleet running an intensive timetable and interesting combinations of locos. Looks like the NYMR are reverting to this and jolly good luck to them. I'm sure it will be a great show and I wish I could be there to witness it.

Looking forward to the LNER gala this weekend. Visiting "The Moors" is always a pleasure for me, be it gala time or a normal services day. I hope the weather is going to get a bit better than it is now as it's raining here in York at present.

I noticed along the A64 and in the Pickering area there are AA signs advertising the gala which say something along the lines "see Tornado and Sir Nigel Gresley" so someone must be getting the advertising right. Not sure if the non enthusiast will realize the significance of 2 BR blue Pacifics running together but I think quite a few member's of "Jo Public" will know the names of Tornado and and Sir Nigel Gresley with the amount of publicity these two machines have had over the past years. Let's hope the signs will spark the odd bit of interest in the casual visitor and get them to come along to the gala.

It will be nice to see Tornado this weekend in BR blue though, as I haven't seen her in the flesh yet in this livery. Something has always managed to get in the way of me making a visit to see it when ever it's passed through York recently.

75029 is listed instead of 60163 on the loco roster on the NYMR website for today and tomorrow. Has 60163 failed, or not arrived?

Only four steam locos listed for tomorrow - no diesels - which I think is only just sufficient to cover the timetable, with no loco changes at either end.

Update of NYMR website 3.10pm today has 60163 in the line-up today and tomorrow. Curiously it has it's number for tomorrow as 61063, some rapid re-building tonight required at Grosmont shops!

S160 & B1 at Pickering tonight. Late change of plan due to inevitable loco problems but all should be OK for tomorrow after some heroic efforts by shed staff.

Could be 61264 renumbered as 61063, perhaps? :)

I went to the NYMR LNER event today. 75029 did the Battersby run with load 6 and was very good in the autumn colours and sun. There are so many slacks on the Esk Valley line but then you get the engine accelerating away from them, hard! It was great to hear the engine running at speed. All locos that should have been out were, 45428 was in steam as standby and tomorrow Lambton 29 is also due out to do three Grosmont to Goathland shuttles with the GWR saloon. The Pullman was load 8 with Gresley and Tornado also had an eight coach set, four teaks and four Mk 1s. The G5 rebuild society had a stall at Grosmont.
