So two A4's on the ECML on the same day. 60009 KGX to Lincoln and 60019 on the York to Kings Cross.

If it's anything like the frothing at the mouth rant I was on the receiving end of after suggesting me going on this, I think that's fairly accurate!!

Email just received from Pathfinder about the Tyne Tees Streak:

Thank you for your patience while arrangements have been on-going for re-dating this eagerly awaited excursion.

This has proved a rather more long winded task than we first imagined, due to:

    1. the commitment for all six A4 locos to be on show at the National Railway Museum in late October and early November.

    2. a large number of weekend engineering blockades on the East Coast Main Line this Autumn.

    3. the limited availability of suitable drivers at DB Schenker, whilst the demands of the Autumn Railhead Treatment Trains get priority.

The good news is that a new date has now been confirmed for the running of 'The Tyne-Tees Streak'. This is THURSDAY 5TH DECEMBER, 2013 and will be broadly to the same schedule and itinerary as per the original plan.

Congratulations and thanks to Pathfinder and all the other players for hanging in there to deliver what was promised.

    STILL can't wait!

Peter, on a cold bright Autumn day in Manchester

Actually I hope not, as it would be nice to get most, if not all of the return steam leg in daylight. As Bittern is only running for around 80 minutes before it comes off its train, it would be nice if the stopover at Newcastle could be cut down to two hours from four. Then we would be back at York by 4 pm (and passengers from Bristol would get home before bedtime!)
I have absolutely nothing against Newcastle but on this occasion it is a means to an end not a destination, in my view.

A couple of hours providing that the loco can get to the servicing point pretty smartish.

So if RTC and Network Rail are following this thread Big Al's plan will all depend on there being slots in and out of Newcastle station :)

AND a path back down the ECML, which is pretty busy in the afternoon, would need to be found. One solution to the pathing in/out of Newcastle would be to terminate the northbound run at Tyne Yard & restart from there, but even the most die-hard gricer, 90mph running and a 'means to an end' notwithstanding, might baulk at that one, never mind the 'normals' who would also be on the train from Bristol.

A very tricky one for the planners and promoters.

You still haven't got this business of "how to handle wimmin" have you Billy? I despair. When they kick off like that, it's simple............coat on, and they will rant "and where do you think you're going"......................................."the pub my love, for a pint and a bit of peace and quiet".........................Job done, believe me, eventually they get fed up of ranting when they see it isn't working.;)
If you want to go, get yerself booked on it.

And note this:- this is FREE advice..........from a Yorkshireman............we ooze generosity.:D

Better put me in your A4 book as after everything you have said about Mrs V over the years I don't believe this advice would work in your house. I'm sure she would just follow you and join you in a pint or two. Maybe she wouldn't carry on in the pub, but afterwards back at home.......................

The original timing had a return from Newcastle at 1645 with the train running (just!) in front of the 1530 from Edinburgh to KX, arriving in York a few minutes ahead of it. If NR was happy with that (and it was a particularly quick schedule) presumably they will be just as happy with 1445 off Newcastle and running in a similar path ahead of the 1330 from Edinburgh. But then there is the necessary platform space of 30 min or so at York not to mention the onward path southeastwards. Anyway, there is time to look at options and I'm sure that Milton Keynes will have other people "helping" them sort out something good. Let's wish them luck and also something earlier for the return.

Everyone hoping for an earlier scheduled return on the Newcastle trip should note that the "Tyne Tees Streak" and "The York Excursion" from Pathfinder seem to have been combined into a single tour. The York Excursion page advertises a feature of the tour as "a relaxing eight hours or so" in York, so seems Pathfinder have set a departure from York at 1830 in the evening for the passengers visiting York.

Whether Bittern could run earlier and everyone gets a couple of hours leg stretch at York on the return while waiting for the 1830 departure time I wouldn't guess.

That's a good idea. Time in York v time in Newcastle. Sorry, I've absolutely nothing against Newcastle but IMHO York is a better option.

It always was one tour-a way for Pathfinder to extract £74 more from some of those in the SW to fill a seat ,then reused by someone else from York for Bittern at the same price as if they had joined at Bristol....
Then some bright spark suggests terminating at Tyne Yard as easier for pathing .....Great VFM from York as it already isn't....

What!! There is already a path and IIRC that doesn't change till the timetable changes later in December. Anyway, the entry to Tyne Yard takes almost as long as getting from Chester-le-Street to Birtley so a nice fast start to stop time gets rather interesting. And then we are towed to Newcastle and back by a diesel....in a path, presumably? That's a nice debating point but surely nobody is seriously thinking along those lines. At least I doubt if anyone with a brain is.
