I hope I it doesn't get cannibalised too, especially when you can build a large steam locomotive from scratch.

    Kind regards,

Assuming the best bits off 35009 go to the other two, woulden't it have the parts discarded from those two ?.

Remember 45699, 5043 and 7802 among others started out as spares donors so it doesn't prevent restoration, though admittedly adds some £££.

I don't understand the thinking here. Port Line is a complete loco that is being overhauled. 35009 and 35022 are in a similar condition, ex-Barry, but 35022 is a bit rustier. What bits of 35009 would go on the other two?

I guess that will depend on what they find during the respective overhauls. I believe that Shaw Savill already 'donated' some motion parts that Tangmere managed to bend. Also there was a wheel swap between locos when a crack was found on another Bulleid, not SS in this case.

I think it was 249 Squadron that donated motion parts to Tangmere, and I believe that at the time both were owned by John Bunch weren't they?

I'm not sure I'd see it as a problem. Riley is restoring Holland America and overhauling Port Line as a contract-so new parts are going to be factored into the price. I couldn't really see why he'd want to strip his own asset for the sake of saving his customer a few quid. (Well, more than a few, but you get the point...)

Has that actually been confirmed anywhere? Last I heard 35027 was to be restored, and investigations into the possibility of restoring 35022 - but no final decision.

There's been no updates about the locos from IR anyway so I'm not sure that much/any work has been done on either loco.

Taking a reality pill: if that is what it takes, isn't it better to have two locos running using the best components from a third, rather than no loco running at all? (And don't even get into the story of the surviving Maunsell S15s!)

On the "Icons of Steam Website", it says that 35022 "is also undergoing restoration to mainline running condition" - see http://www.iconsofsteam.com/locomotives/#35022

Only if they are all owned by the same people ... otherwise it gets complicated :)

With 5,9,18, 22, 27 plus of course 28, that's a fifth of the class active or with the serious potential to be so. That does seem to me to be quite a high proportion. Obviously, at one level that would be great but I wonder if rationalisation of the MN stock might be a good idea given that there's only been one (The Chosen One) that has been on the main line for nearly 40 years. I can't believe I just said that as a fan of the class but this probably is not the time to crank up too many preservation projects, is it?

    Yes, agreed.

Plus 35006 at the GWSR, albeit not (AFAIK) for mainline use. Though I can't help wondering at the long-term economics of a Merchant Navy on a fairly flat preserved line pulling six coach trains... :-(

Was that one numbered 35005 or 35028 when you saw it?

Didn't 35027 have one run on the main line in preservation, or am I thinking of 34072?

By my maths thats actually 6, with a seventh in the form of 35006, although 5/6 are unlikely to go main line. I do wonder if there is enough work for all of them on the main line if one also includes the various light pacifics in the mix.

Hopefully we will get 2 of them double heading on the mainline as that will be an amazing sight!

Once upon a time, Port Line was to receive the boiler from Holland-America Line so if that has happened, which boiler is destined for Holland-America Line?..

If memory serves, 35027's firebox was on its last legs, so that was the reasoning behind the proposed swap. However, there is always the possibility that plans have changed in the meantime.
