MPH presumably, which does sound heavy weather when I've been over at 40 on the Duchess with 13.

Nice shots Stephen and she certainly sounded a lot better on the return, the bad leak seemingly cured.

Thanks Ralph, I did think after she passed me in the morning that I would not see her again today with that bad leak but well done to the support staff for fixing the leak .

I didn't think she would make it up Shap, very poorly indeed. LINK

Later in the day she cruised into Garsdale then opened up and you could hear her for miles afterwards

    seemingly cured. LINK

Here's a shot of her plodding gallantly up towards Shap Summit at Shap Wells:

Pleased to hear she was better on the return - more than can be said for my car which went into "limp mode" as I arrived at Shap and stayed that way all the way back to darkest Wirral.

We were all concerned on the train about the flange lubricator at Scout Green. It didn't seem to affect poor old 99 thank God. A slip and I think it would have been curtains. Is this FL still in place does anyone know?

14 over Shap meant 14 MPH. Today was a day of records - all of the slow sort. It was good to see Galatea on a trip where she had to do some serious work but the load of 10 was not ideal for this Class 6 (or 5+ if you like). The climbs were all a bit of a plod and Shap was doomed to be as it was since we only managed to wind up to 53 just before Tebay after fighting over Grayrigg at 26. We made reasonable progress to Appleby but took five minutes longer than 46115 last week. After the water and pathing stop it was an equally slow climb to Ais Gill. 26 through Kirkby Stephen and 21 at MP 260. This compared with 46115 that went through KS at 31 and fell away to 25 by the top on a truly appalling day for wind and rain. Fortunately Galatea had better weather today.

Probably the best climb was from the signal stop at Whalley where Ron Smith got her set at 19 mph up towards Langho and just left her to get on with it. Anything more and she would have slipped as indeed happened on the leaves just short of the top. (Hopefully when she does the VTL trip in November, they might give her 9 overall that may help).

As my first introduction to Galatea, I was reminded that single chimney Jubilees are nice and noisy (and Galatea sounded that today) but hang anything too heavy on the back or ask them to climb anything tricky and you get what happened today. That said, the crews worked hard to get as much as they could out of her today and all credit to the man on the shovel on the way back as his mate tried quite hard to shift his fire out of the chimney.

Two snaps added at Appleby as Galatea waits with her train in the Warcop spur and then draws her train back for passengers to re-board. It reminded me of when we used to have photo run-bys. P1060529.JPG P1060530.JPG

Stuart..absolutely brilliant 60's type one at Garsdale, the station lamps add to the effect..you take so many good'uns, it can't be all luck !!!....Henry, ok a bit of luck with the rainbow but so what, lovely photo using an excellent location.....Pete

That FL used to cause a lot of problems, the Earl and Lizzie both slipped badly there in March last year but since then it has not seemed to have been as much trouble, and this year the Earl and the Duchess had no problems. Whether it's the drivers being very cautious or the FL has been removed I'm not sure.

I get the impression that Galatea might have had some steaming issues, comparing the previous run which had a generally cleaner exhaust and obviously right up to the mark on boiler pressure and climbed Gresford bank easily with 13 on, on Shap with 10 on she was plodding and had a smokey exhaust.
    Just my thoughts.

    Cheers Dave

I think the main issue on the day was the gale force winds and - at Ribblehead - the driving rain which would have created many adhesion problems. I suspect it was taken easy to avoid slipping and in the prevailing weather conditions that was no mean feat. Results from my day noted below :
