You may be right on that point. Steam was definitely not an issue on the return though. The crew was good and I don't believe that they could have got any more out of her but it was still a slowish climb. On the Gresford bank point...it's interesting that as we walked up Shap someone from the West Coast team commented that they were not surprised given her Shrewsbury trip. Anyway, she looked good, sounded fine but dropped time in each direction. Let's hope that VTL have better luck.

Maybe the FL has been fixed so that it greases the flanges of passing trains (as it is supposed to) rather than the railhead?

I looked up the only other time I have been over Shap behind a Jubilee which was Leander on the 25/9/09 on " The West Highlander "with 10 on ( we were had the support coach for 61194 plus a buffet which was only taken as far as Glasgow) and the speed at the summit was 24mph. We were looped either side of Oxenholme and were not looped at Tebay was planned.

I would still like to know when Galatea last visited Shap - in BR / LMS days of course.

    Cheers

Yes, it's interesting to compare the two climbs of Shap with both locos having the same load of 10 for around 380 gross.
Galatea: Tebay 48, Shap 14. Leander: Tebay 59, Shap 24. It just illustrates that the impetus of speed at Tebay does help with speed at the summit although notice that the drop of speed was about the same. And on the Leander trip who can forget the assault on Beattock with double the distance at 1 in 75 yet only 21 at the slowest point, not to mention the tour de force with Gordon Hodgson on the southbound run. Ok - it's a different kind of climb, a bit like Ais Gill southbound, but after topping Craigenhill at 42, we romped through Carstairs at 75 and were still hammering along at 64 after Elvanfoot before having to slow for the stop in the loop at the summit.

As it stands, Galatea has yet to produce the punch that we enjoyed with Leander. But it is still early days and as has been demonstrated so far, the West Coast folk seem to be progressively tweaking her up to form, so let's hope for a long period of enjoyable and reliable performances into the future.

    Thanks for the further information.

Does anyone have the load and speeds when Leader went over Shap on a Vintage Train trip on the 2/9/06 in torrential rain ? ( I was on a trip behind the Duke over the S&C that day)

You may need to wait for the guy at Six Bells Jct to publish all his data on steam on the WCML. Did Shrewsbury locos get borrowed by Crewe North?

Where was Galatea based before going to Barrow Road in 1950?

The "Leander over Shap " tour (as it was called) which ran on Sat 2 Sept 2006 was promoted by Vintage Trains and ran with steam from Crewe to Carlisle and back, both ways over Shap. The load is confirmed as 9 but for some reason I never recorded the weight of the load. Having started from Crewe with some brilliant running across Cheshire, Leander would have been hot when it departed Carnforth, unlike Galatea this last Wednesday. On 6 Sept 2006 speed was 49 at MP 9 1/2, 52 at Oxenholme, 42 at Grayrigg, 74 at Tebay, 37 at MP 37 1/2, 38 at Shap summit board, 85 at Penrith South Jn and after slowing to 72 to pass through Penrith station accelerated to run in the low to mid 80's to just south of Southwaite. Running time from Carnforth to Carlisle was 67mins 36secs., non stop.
