Just playing devils advocate here. Would GSR 800 Maeve currently in the UFTM at Cultra have a greater axle weight than a 201 class GM?

Wickipaedia states maeve 21 ton per driving axle
Class 201 112 tons over six axles. So gms are lighter

    EEboy apreciază asta.

She's a big girl alright! I know it's not financially feasible, but I'd dearly love to see her hammering up the old GN mainline!

I seem to recall she got brought up in the 2P thread on here via Dunlace Castle going off topic, the upshot was there was little point considering it if it could only be used on the Dublin - Cork route.

I don't believe they were ever used on the GN mainline - too heavy. As 'david1984' has said above, it would be a very expensive overhaul for a loco that would have severely restricted use.

I seem to recall a photo of it being towed over Drogheda viaduct en route to Cultra (eventually) with a few wagons as a barrier t keep the weight down. I can't see it able to operate anywhere other than the Dublin to Cork line it was built for, and therefore it never is going to happen

A great pity though, a very handsome and imposing loco, mind you I am a little biased, my wife was also called Maeve.

I suppose it bearing a resemblance to a Rebuilt Scot has no bearing on your opinion ;)

That thought did cross my mind when I first saw her in the old museum in Belfast, that must be at least 30 years ago...

Just for the sake of completeness, and as no-one else has yet pointed it out: she could of course run in Victoria or South Australia. I do not suggest that this is remotely realistic or appropriate, but only that it would be possible in principle.
