    Morning All

Can anyone help me out with any info on these 2 photos, clearly showing Jubilee 45577 Bengal & Diesel Hydraulic D801 Vanguard (i think) at Crewe station, were Warships a common sight back in the 60’s?

Maybe the Warship worked a Bristol -Manchester train via the Severn Tunnel and the Maindee Curve at Newport to travel up to Crewe .

GWR services worked in there from Wales so I imagine it was not unknown for a Warship to work in on these runs. The Jubilee has clearly failed and the Warship is rescuing it.... :)

The NBL Warships worked light engine from the factory at Glasgow, through Crewe, presumably down to Swindon, when built. Perhaps this one failed en-route.

This appears to be at the north end of the station therefore would presume this to be a Plymouth - Manchester /Liverpool service on which the diesel has failed and 45577 has been sent as Thunderbird. The Warships were often to be found on the Marches - especially once replaced by the Westerns in 1963. - and 45577 was one of the 82E machines that may have been transferred to Shrewsbury during those early WR dieselisation days.

That seems the most likely scenario. Wasn't Bengal a Shrewsbury loco in the 60s in which case it's quite conceivable that it may have been attached back down the line after a problem with the Warship.

Warships worked into Crewe regularly from about 1963/64 on the west of England trains. As 45577 was allocated to Shrewsbury at this time, possibly the Warship had failed en-route.

the class 42s were Swindon Built,( I stand to be corrected about the early ones which were more prototypes than class 42 if you follow me). (sorry Shrewsbury...I was sure that I have seen a picture of a Dean Goods working in from somewhere Welsh)

What kind of Warship is it, I'm unsure without doing some research, what became the class 42 (IE Greyhound & Onslaught we have today) were decent enough, but the North British ones were pretty ropey by most accounts.

the class 42 were 2200 bhp iirc, but the first few D800 to 802 were only 2000 and were amongst the first to go closely followed by the class 43 s which were not regarded as being as reliable as the 42s. At Reading in the late sixties as a generalisation we saw the 42s on passenger and the 43s on freight. Highlight of any summer Saturday was the up Cornish Riviera Ltd hauled at this time by pairs of 42s and non stop through Reading flat out after coming off the Berks and Hants line.
