Another request for information, which if received is always grateful, does anyone know which locos will work the GCR's Santa services and which direction they currently face?

I went a couple of years ago. There were two sets running. One set had the Peak on the south end with the K4 tender first on the other end. 7 coaches, four different liveries, and one coach was the observation saloon. The other service was the N2 with a full rake of blood and custard Mark 1s. Though looking at photos from the last couple of years, a uniform rake of stock is the exception these days at the GCR.

I get the sense that I'd be wasting my time going over?

Well why not go to the Worth Valley instead, carriages likely to be same colour, steam loco at uphill end so has to work hard up the gradients, and there is a second diesel unit service to enable you to hop on and off at all stations so you are not totally overwhelmed by Joe Public. Look at kwvr.co.uk
Easy to get to by trains from the Midlands to Leeds then a quick hop on a very regular Northern Rail service right to Keighley station and just over the bridge to the Worth Valley trains

A day trip to the Worth Valley is rather far from Worcester, much as I would love to though.

Oh well. I'm getting slightly bored of the SVR, brilliant as it is.

Keighley I believe run with a smokebox door sized headboard. Santas are a nightmare to photograph on most lines for various reasons. Bluebell and Mid Hants can be pretty good, but like you say, quite a long way from Worcester.

Quite likely that our Santa services will be the public service debut of 847 (probably alongside 1638 and 45231)- smokebox-first up the hill, and no diesel on the back. I'm sure you can photoshop the headboard!

Yes it is, one things the SVR has going for it is that it's a headboard minimum and quite often nothing apart from the standard headlamps.

I will try the Santas at the SVR this year for the first time in several years as we're not away for as much of December as usual and there are lots of trains :).

GWSR - locos the wrong way round and they are usually festooned in tinsel so distant shots the order of the day.

That is one advantage to the SVR in that you can have plenty of goes on successive weekends with largely the same locomotives. The main drawback is the short distance of line that the railway operates and the challenge to try and find something new.

trains at the GWSR have looked like this in the past few years:

A reasonably unobtrusive headboard, but as michaelh says, a sprinkling of tinsel on the outside. If you do decide to go, steam is from cheltenham to winchcombe, with railcars between toddington and laverton (similar to the timetable when chicken curve had slipped...) locos will be picked from 8274, 5542 and 2807, with 7903 on standby.

If you just want some wintery shots, then as far as I know the tinsel will be taken off for normal running on the 26-7 with one steam loco and 28th 2 steam locos (7903 being one - hopefully) and then 29-30th all steam locos will be in steam plus some diesel too, and one steam loco a day 31-1st as well. So lots happening at the GWSR over christmas, then we go into hibernation until March, hopefully with 2 new locos in steam!
