Depends on your point of view. Tangmere as good as it is, isn't exactly rare in these parts.. 44871 and 45407 aren't here that often, and when was the last time two black fives double headed out of Euston ??? - Thats where I will be.

Would be nice to see some of the locos that seem to always stay up north, 46115 and the like, black fives are a bit boring.

From a Southern man who has fallen for a black 5 or two ;) , you sir/madam need to get out a tad more and see them in full flow!

Each to their own but I suggest a trip on The Jacobite behind one, The Cambrians with 48 were pretty special, then there's the Tin Bath already mentioned. A 5 working to it's potential with a decent load behind it and some tough gradients certainly isn't boring! Ah well, I won't be enjoying myself too much over the coming couple of weeks.......

Just so. I was on this one. 34 over Copy Pit and it didn't matter where you were on the train, you could hear the action up front.

I'm not the biggest fan of 5's myself having Riley's two is MUCH better than having 44932 come out and fail so many times. No offense.

My favourite non SR UK steam class.

Lovely machines. Always had a soft spot for them. Very sad they have a 60 mph limit these days. Once timed one at, or very close to 90 mph coming down the WCML some way south of Shap in 1967. Somewhere before Carnforth, I would need to dig out my notebooks to see exactly where.

A Riley 5, minutes into a journey? That could be misinformation. It's certainly stopped according to RTT.

On RTT shown as passed Parkstone (08.14 - 6l) but hasn't yet got to Branksome - beyond the summit.

National Rail website showing incident created at 08.34 referring to a broken down train.

    Ho hum.
