    I'm on it and I can't wait. Tickets aren't cheap and I'm closing the shop for the day but if we achieve what the tour is setting out to do, it will be worth it.

    Dark - no problem. I have my night vision specs ready for Newcastle to York that will be quite an interesting journey in the dark. There will be no difficulty in knowing how fast we are going but as for where we are and spotting, for example, Danby Wiske or Sessay, that'll be another matter. So all we need on this and the London bound leg is for someone to attach a piece of GPS kit to Bittern, link it to the NR positioning system and then get it beamed to our laptops on the train so we can have real time mapping. Simples.

    It has been thought of, but at the time TOCs were not to happy about that sort of info being in the public domain. OK I know we can have our GPS and map on phone, or linked to laptop and displayed on OS maps, as I have, but actually having it live on the net...................

    what would be easy is for someone to share their "find my iPhone" app… it uses maps and moves in real time, can be viewed in a browser.
    My wife uses it to judge how long it will take me to get home :)

    very simples.

    So far as knowing where you are Al, use the "Veltom method".

    Record the exact speed from the GPS every 15 seconds for the whole journey. Even better if you can get a time at a milepost fairly early on.

    Then put it all on a quite simple spreadsheet and with time and speed you can work out the distance at each 15 seconds of the run. From that produce a log accurate to the nearest second, as per normal.

    Such a system is helped if you can get times at known exact distances at any point during the journey. Helps correct any small errors that creep in, especially if there are any checks and speed falls sharply.

    But you probably know this system very well anyway!

    I'm not making excuses but when TOCs were approached and asked out of courtesy, they were not happy with the idea. Only saying like it was at the time.

    I think it comes from when some GPS devices record an occasional dodgy reading, then said person broadcasts said dodgy reading as fact, On a tour in the last few years, the GPS on my phone recorded the pair of 37's upfront at 103MPH, they woulden't do that if you pushed them off a cliff.
