43106 reported out and about today top-and-tailing with 2857 on SVR service trains.

    ...Nearly there...

Lovely image, Lewis, thanks for sharing.
With 43106 displaying its "M & GN" ancestry, (South Lynn shedplate and tablet catcher bracket on the tender), I was just musing as to whether the SVR could could come up with a "Branch line" gala with a difference...? Not too many engines with M & GN connections, but maybe the B12, a B1, inevitably a Black 5, and we have both LMS and LNER coaching stock.....? Even some of the signals in the Eastern Counties were lower quadrant, in a different style of course!

Well, 43106 is currently in the paint shop receiving some final attention before being put back in service. News is that 4930 is coming out of the Engine house in October and 45110 will go in to replace it.

Interestingly, the NRM's ex GER J17 0-6-0 65567 was allocated to Melton Constable for a few years in the 1950s.
Also, LMS 4F 0-6-0s were regular visitors to the M&GN.

A long time since this was updated:
    Currently in service: 1501, 2857 ,4566, 4936*, 5164, 5643*, 7812, 34053, 43106
Those marked * are on short term hire due to end after the forthcoming festive season
5164 will go out of service after the festive season or earlier if it becomes defective

    In works & those being stripped about to enter - 813, 4150(Bewdley) 7714, 4930, 7802 (Tyseley bottom end; Bridgnorth boiler) 34027, 42968, 75069, 82045 + contact jobs
    Likely returns to service over the next 12 months - 813, 7714, 7802, 34027

Plenty of scope for getting involved via the VLO at the link below & a good time to visit? - well with this much steam available it has to be! - festive & 2014 info here:

In the short-term 7714 is the most likely candidate for a return to service, so it will be interesting to see if the SVR are confident enough to go into the Summmer season without a hire-in loco.
7802 as you mention is being worked on in two locations, so perhaps that might also be a candidate for the main season. 34027's bottom half is said to be complete, so it depends on progress with restaying the firebox, following manufacture of a new inner firebox. The SVR has had the foresight to install a CNC lathe so that it can manufacture firebox stays in quantity in-house.

813 has been mentioned for an early 2014 return but I can only assume she will be off on her travels like she usually is due to her size.

Did work normal services early in its last ticket when they were desperate, though!

For the SVR's normal operation it's got enough grunt but water capacity seems to be it Achilles heel.

The latest update on the loco overhaul queue is contained in an article in Heritage Railway magazine, and indeed corrects my earlier assertion a couple of posts back.

Returning: 813 early 2014, but this small loco is not really a normal service candidate. 7714 towards the end of the 2014 season. 34027 possibly summer 2014, 7802 late 2014 or early 2015, 42968 in 2016, 4930 and 75069 in 2017, and 45110 in 2018.
Out of traffic, assuming loco runs to expected end of ticket: 5164, end of 2013, 4566 to 2016, 7812 to 2017.

I find it somewhat depressing that this information first appears in the trade press rather than in-house for the SVR membership, but there you go....

Agreed with the last comment, it is very annoying.
Something which took my eye from the above:
Which of course means 45110 must be going into the works at some point in the not too distant future :)

(BTW anyone else unable to quote people?)

Interesting to note though that there will be more than one large loco going through BH works at the same time, by my calculations three, ie 4930, 75069, and 42968, and also there will be more work to finish 34027 when it receives its boiler, and 7802 to put back together, either at BH or TYS.

    But...this is positive news.

The estimate for '29 is a far length of time.

The money is in the bank for the overhaul, she is in very good condition, with minimal work on the bottom end needed. The good water she has had throughout her previous ticket should hopefully reduce any work on the boiler. I remember about 2/3s of the way through her ticket there were tube problems. Not through the loco but through inferior metals being used in the tube production.

I remember a statement by the EMF about the tubes coming out of 7802. The tubes were so good they could have been used again.

I think its safe to say (he says touching every piece of wooden furniture in the house and crossing everything that can be) the SVR is over the hill with all the engines appearing in the next 24 months. Hopefully we will be saying this come December 31st 2014.

Trouble with several engines appearing at once is that they'll probably all come out of traffic at the same time as well, but at least the problem is shifted a few years ahead.

True but at least it should provide a bit of breathing space so planning can take place to try to avoid such a situation in the future.

Another issue that the SVR appears to be looking at where possible is the "five-year intermediate" overhaul, given the quickie undertaken last winter on 43106, which I think did reset the boiler ticket.
If in the scheme of things at five years you either do the boiler, or below the running plate, then arguably you dont end up with-- please excuse the phrase--a "totally knackered" loco at ten years. Ian Riley appears to operate this way, and didn't Steve say on another topic that the NYMR aim to do this as well?

(Hopefully 75069 now in the works will be the last SVR loco in this unfortunate category.)
