Do they not use the Roman mile - mille passus - on the GWR rather than the statute mile? That would explain a lot.

Steve it would make it a lot easier for those who don't know the way round your site if you published the link directly to the photo concerned...

On account of serving so many ports and naval establishments, the SR used nautical miles - which makes the antics of the summer of '67 all the more impressive!

It's a "milia passuum" or "a thousand of steps"

If in doubt, stick it in the genitive :p

You can't blame them for getting bored, "GW loco performs faultlessly" doesn't make for very good banter.

It certainly was busy at Colton where I managed to cope with the wind and 'other' obstacles plus edit a car horn out. (apologies for the title quality)

Well (he says through gritted teeth) I have to say 5043 made this one look very easy indeed.

OK, it was a pretty much a billiard table of a route and an easy schedule, but the run was ideal for the customers on board, with much eating and drinking going on (well there was in our party that's for sure). There was some impressive acceleration away from the many stops, and the odd stretch which felt like 75mph, but this trip was all about running to time and not spilling the soup, which Messrs Churchill and Poole achieved with some aplomb. Friends and mothers-in-law went away very happy, and would like to record their thanks to Ben and his catering team for the excellent food and service on board.

Of course the icing on the Christmas cake was No.9 rolling into York 10 mins behind us ;)

No Tom, the mileposts on the western aren't closer together, they just go by quicker.

Pleasure to have you with us. Very glad y'all enjoyed the day. You should have had quite an earful from 5043 sitting that close to it in the morning. Also did you notice the "rain" effect from the self cleaning smokebox when the Rays open the handle!

    Cheers!
