    The one that must hold the record is the name 'Ogmore Castle' which was assigned to locos 5056, 5080, 7007 and finally 7035 :) (it also later appeared on 56034 :) )

    Slightly related: What's the greatest number of different numbers any loco ever carried?

    I can think of LBSCR Terrier46 "Newington":

    Built as LBSCR No. 46 "Newington"
    Renumbered No. 646
    Sold to LSWR as No. 734 (and lost name)
    Sold to Freshwater, Yarmouth and Newport as No. 2
    Renumbered W2 by Southern Railway
    Renumbered W8 and named "Freshwater"
    Renumbered 32646 by BR

    (And now preserved as W8 Freshwater)

    So seven numbers and two names. Terrier 78 also had seven number changes and two names.

    (78 "Knowle" / 678 / B678 / W4 / W14 "Bembridge" / 2678 / 32678 and also now preserved)

    Just going back to the Arthurs discussion, I think the names of the Standards were all from the Urie series 30736-55.

    I may be wrong but I cannot think of any other instance when there was the wholesale transfer of names from one type of locomotive to another. Were not 20 Southern Standard 5s so named - 73080-89 and 73110-9?

    While on the subject, is 7828 ever going back to Odney Manor or is it a temporary thing ?, naming an unnamed loco is one thing, but renaming an existing one doesn't sit as comfortably.

    I notice Witherslack Hall is going one step further and aquiring a new identity - 6988 Swithland Hall, doesn't bother me too much short term as 6988 existed, but don't like the idea she may never go back to 6990.

    I understand the point of the tender swap with 4930 was to have 6990 in Exchange trials condition

    The Earl names from the 'Dukedogs' to the Castles :D
    Various 'Claughton' names to 'Patriots'? Several 'Royal Scot' names to 'Patriots'. In fact the LNWR seems to have had a habit of recycling names, likewise the GWR used a number of names several times going back to Broad gauge days.

    The book to look at is British Locomotive Names of the Twentieth Century by H C Casserley. A few names come up quite often.

    Thanks for the tip. Yes, individual names come up often but to take a block of names from the whole class of Urie Arthurs and then transfer them to the Southern Standards, especially at the late stage of steam on the network does seem quite unusual. At the time I took it for granted but looking back, whoever was responsible for doing it at Eastleigh probably deserves greater thanks than they may have received at the time. And Camelot lives on......

    The SR always had a slick PR machine (largely the creation of JB Elliott) and I assume that those skills didn't immediately die out in 1948. Incidentally, I seem to recall that Maunsell had to be persuaded against his better judgment about naming the King Arthurs: what an inspired decision it was to go against his preference!

    Correct, and since 6990 ran on the GCR in 1948 whereas 6988's only spurious connection with the line is to have been named after a nearby hall, I can't see many GCR volunteers being too happy if it becomes permanent. It has been reported as happening in the GCR's magazine but I haven't seen it mentioned as permanent. But as a temporary thing for a bit of publicity, why not?

    By the way the Sherwood Foresters name on 45231 is a contraction of the name it carried in the 70s which was something like The 3rd Battallion, The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment (feel free to correct this if I haven't remembered it correctly!)

    Something to do with Bachmanns announcement of a model of 6988 Swithland Hall perhaps, there not a million miles away from the GCR and have some announcements of their own come summer ?
