Bit of a sneak peek but LocoYard.com is doing an advent calendar of Christmas/December related railway photos and todays features a photo of CanPac that was taken on Monday.

Just goes to show what a good job they are doing stripping her down for inspection, its hard to imagine a couple of months ago she was pretty much in one piece. Lets just hope funding for the locomotive is secured soon so they can begin the hard work of restoring her.

Possibly steam supply to the injectors, which are mounted under the cab.

Yes, but they would be on the right hand side and the article says left - at least, the injector controls are on the right side of the cab on a Bulleid pacific.

Possibly they were part of the steam supply to the brake. Have you got any other description (for example, size, did they run up into the cab etc etc?)

One pipe went forward towards the front of the locomotive and the second one bent right into the frames and was fitted to a bracket in the center of the frame under the cab floor. Looking at that photo of Clan Line it does make me think it is something to do with the brakes.

Looks like a pressure reducing valve - are you sure it doesn't feed the Stones generator behind it? Otherwise maybe part of the AWS system perhaps?

It would probably help reassembly if the person concerned found out what the pipe does and attaches a label to that effect!

If I were presented with a pile of bits that was once a complete Norton Dominator, but had been dismantled to the last nut and bolt, I could rebuild it without recourse to a manual. Are there still loco fitters about that could do the same for a Bulleid?

Rebuilding a Bulleid pacific without a manual is a bit of a different league to a Norton Dominator but, to answer your question, there are plenty of people out there who could do it. However, pipe runs in particular can be quite awkward, especially lubrication ones. When you are faced with a few hundred similar (but not the same) pipes, knowing which one goes where is 90% of the battle. Without that knowledge, it can be easier, if a lot more expensive, to start from scratch. Jigsaws are always easier if you have a picture to work to, but not impossible.

You're so right. During 34081's strip down the lubrication pipes were marked carefully but quite a lot of the marks didn't survive the cleaning. The guy who did most of the work first time around is still on the team so his knowledge is proving invaluable.
