Aye, they were different days back then.

Not sure what happened to the model. I seem to recall it was located at Matlock Bath somewhere. Not sure it it is still there or not....or where there is?

 

It was in the big stone shed behind Slaters Plasticard. It may still be there.

For those of you interested in the new loco shed at Darley Dale...

The foundation and drainage work is due to begin on Monday (13th), and within a month we hope to have the steelwork erected. (And a note to any other budding shed-builders – remember that from the 1st July, your steelwork must carry CE markings before it is erected). All this of course is subject to the weather but we hope to have the building completed by the Summer.

How does that affect the re-erection of the reclaimed Darley Dale footbridge? Doesn't it carry grandfather rights? What if some parts are original and some new?

 

Thank you Sidmouth; it answers my question about the new. But what about the old reused/refurbished metal?

 

From a quick glance, I doubt it. The Regs are made under a Procurement Directive and apply to the supply of materials & goods and it is the supplier who would be guilty of an offence. Need to read it more carefully to be certain, though.

 

Well quite a bit going on , firstly the work to start getting the foundations for mr Briddons shed at Darley dale has started with contractors getting ready to dig holes for the shed, more to report on that in the coming weeks.

Hello all, we add mr Keith spencer , a long time volunteer to our signalling department mailing list tonight, Keith for those who don't know was the last person to reroof Darley box and told us quite a bit about it all and was also involved in building the last part of the toilet block at Darley, he called in today to see if the box had moved which was fortuitous as today the box did indeed move, Rob ,John and the gang had spent the last few days laying a sleeper access over the crossing lead off for the crane to access the front off the box and also had spent time taking out the end boards around the base so the spreader and slings could be run in through the box

Shires cranes supplied the crane and was on site first before the low loader crew and their support vehicle, mid morning had arrived by the time the crew had accessed the track and we set about getting sleepers on track to spread the load on the cranes outrigger legs, the next task was for the crane crew to assemble the spreader beam and while this was ongoing the slings were threaded through the cabin base.

Following the crane taking about a ton of the total weight of the cabin we set about unbolting the steel support and the corner legs and mid legs then following the crane taking a bit more weight it was noted that the corner plates that had protected the join between upstairs and downstairs all these years were stopping the box lifting properly, cue big hammer and saw again until eventually the upstairs shifted and the crane could then set about lifting the operating floor across to the wagon in the car park.



With loading completed onto the wagon we set about tidying up the area and at the same time got the old block shelf, relay cupboard and door plus a few other bits n prices inside the cabin while we could as there's little chance of shifting them again without another works train

Up at Rowsley Kevin and myself started to unbolt the bridge sides over the access so their loader could enter the site before watching the cabin arrive and be loaded onto the flat wagon to be shunted as was the ex Luffenham cabin down the S&T siding to start its restoration.

With an hour to spare after shunting all the stock back I uncapped all the plywood off the rotten end to find the boards underneath in good nick, a quick creosote at the base to ensure no water ingress till the woodwork is cut for the cabin to replace the damaged bits.

Having looked at whats required with Harvey we note that only one quarter panel of tongue and groove on the front needs changingand the old door end needs completely repanelling, the outer door end lintel underneath that (inner one being sound) needs replacing where the stairs sat as it had rotted behind and bar that the only woodwork to replace is the far end window sill top ( not part of the box but an in filling bit probably put on when it moved to Darley and a small bit of damaged wood under the front quarter that needs repanelling anyway which can be filled with an epoxy filler, so all in all about a days work to hack out the old door end beam and repanel at the same time and a couple days painting to make waterproof and good the exterior, glazing is an issue wel sort out later on when time permits.

With the weather being dry I've painted some base coat on the good boards on the front to keep out the weather,as with moving the box all the old mortised joints have loosened somewhat so nows the time to keep water out before it does anymore damage.





By the end of play Rob ,Pete ,John, Kevin and myself had managed to dismantle two out of the four walls of the old locking room and this will be continued tommorow, the old electric board has also been removed so that it can be relocated within a temporary location cupboard that will be slid over the top of this.

So what's next, well John and myself are manning riverside till the end of February, in a weeks time il undertake the locking alteration there as previously mentioned, in the mean time Harvey and Pete are working out the tongue and grooving board for the cabin so that come February we can get on with this, but before this the end beam will be changed, the stripping and painting can conitinue in the background and I've already found some repair boarding in our wood store which il plan in for a week day over this coming three weeks, if anyone fancies helping me paint then please let me know, so we can plan the best time/ date to do this, mid week probably around a Friday or a Monday day over the next three weeks could be a good start, let me know when you're free

You're absolutely right for mass-manufactured items such as speculatively made replica lighting columns. However, it seems to be difficult to get a definitive answer when items are being custom made to a historic design.

 

I dunno, sometimes you've just got to do it yourself

Did you have the new foundations ready to put it on?

 

No not yet, there's some restoration to do yet, bit of tongue and groove to replace on front left end, replace the outer beam under the door end (inner ones good), at sane time replace all the tongue and groove on door end,filled in fake window sill top on other end to take out and replace and repaint with several coats of paint, beyond that rest is in much better nick than luffenham was, hence its on the wagon so we can get at it which we wouldn't have been able to do if it was mounted in the air straight away.
