For those wondering where all this is coming from, it's in the latest Steam Railway.

Photographs showing the remains of the firebox ring crudely gas axed out from either side of the boiler and the firebox, then dumped inside the frames of the crab.

Boiler / Firebox parts must have been taken away in bits.

If you read the Steam Railway article it also states that the owner has previously noted that the loco requires a new boiler; whilst the article doesn't make clear when the owner scrapped the boiler, the fact he accepts the need for a new one should be enough to confirm his continued interest - even if only to know what he has to sell if that is his choice.

What i cant get my head round is this, even if the boiler was in need of repair, you would not cut all of it up, if it was the inner firebox, you would just remove that, same with the tubeplate, i would have thought that the boiler would have been repaired rather than cut up, this is of cource, going on the assumption that the owner had it scrapped, if it was off the crab, it possibly may have been removed by the owner of the site, who knows?

To build a completely new boiler requires a lot of paperwork. If you use 10% of the old boiler, it is a different matter.
I am sure that the County team will verify that.

Do we actually know if the owner ever recovered the "removed" driving wheels?

I think it's safe to assume that if there was any intention to visit build a new boiler at some time in the future the foundation ring and throat plate at least would have been retained.

So the loco is down to frames, cylinders and tender? Never say never, of course, but the owner has a mountain to climb!

The kindest thing to say in that case is that the owner , if he thinks he can restore what is left, has to be deluding himself.or is listening to too many of preservations dreamers of the we can do it veriety

I'm sure the ELR could have made some use of the parts at scrap price. Spare wheels and a boiler being worked on while 13065 spends years in traffic would make the next overhaul much quicker. Owners to do as he wished of course but damned frustrating for others I guess.

26D_M, I think you should read all of today's posts about 42859.

26D_M, you mentioned the boiler. It has been reported here, today, that the boiler from 42859 has been cut up.

And my point was pity it was not offered to ELR at scrap price for them to use in some way rather than be cut up. Sorry if I didn't make it clearer. Obviously too late now.

I wouldn't hold much hope on the tender.., story goes the useful part is in a scrapyard (or scrapped already).

    Think of it as..

Wheels (in contention / could end up scrapped)
    Frames
    Cylinders
    Bad Luck
    thats it.

If it comes back.. it will be a bigger come back than Scotsman and Tornado combined.

Preservation sadly will probably only ever see 1 working crab, another in a museum and a tragic story of a third.

Question that comes to my mind is, if scrapping major components such as the boiler out of choice, and potentially losing wheelsets too, why go to the trouble of transporting and storing other large components such as the frames? Why haven't they been broken up at the same time? Its not like they have much use for anything else. Such a shame if this loco is lost to preservation, doesn't look good...
