Swanage Diesel Gala 2014

I was on wnxx today and saw the date for the Diesel Gala which takes place from the 9th to the 11th May and will have a Network SouthEast theme should be a good one to attend me thinks

I'd love to think that this means the Epping/Ongar 205 could be visiting (that would seal my attendance!), but visiting DEMU's for galas are rare as hen's teeth and the Swanage gala tends to use Mainline convoys for obvious reasons.

 

That would ran paying for one possible 2 lorry moves as 33202 is already at swanage

Am sure that the organisers will let us know what will be attending in good time.
I am lead to believe that the gala is look upon as one of the best in the country and is seen as the first "big one" to start the year off.

 

Yes, a Hampshire demu would be a magnet, at least for my generation, and you could create a perfect 1960s/70s timewarp at Corfe Castle. Watching the Swanage Railway website like a hawk!

 

I dare say a press lease wont be far away announcing what will be happening....

At least 3 of the people who post on that link are part of the organising team..so when the line up is announced (from what i have been told its not far away) I dare say regular updates will be on there too...

 

It now says in the Facebook page that the gala is from 8th to 11th May one themed day on the 9th then main gala for the other 3 I just wonder what the theme will be for the 8th

The Swanage Railway are delighted to announce final details for the
Railways forthcoming 9th annual Diesel Gala and Dorset Beer Festival
(Organised and run by The Bankes Arms,Corfe Castle), which is running from
Friday 9th to Sunday 11th May 2014.

There will be an intensive 3 train service operating between Swanage and
Norden Park & Ride from 08:00 to midnight each day (19:00 on Sunday) with
all trains hauled by visiting diesel locomotives and those based at the
Swanage Railway.

The confirmed initial line up for this years gala is:- (all locos subject to
availability of course)....

Class 24 - D5081
Class 25 - D7629
Class 33 - 33202 and 33111
Class 47 - 47292
Class 50 - 50031 'Hood' (Courtesy of The Fifty Fund)

More visiting Locos will be added in the near future!.....


The 'Bankes Arms' at Corfe Castle will again be the location of this years
'Dorset Beer Festival', where a wide variety of local beers and ciders will
be available while watching trains arriving and departing from Corfe Castle
station. In addition to the 3 train gala service, 2 locos will be on display
for the duration of the gala here- Class 50, 50035 'Ark Royal' and the prototype
HST power car, 41001 (courtesy of the National Railway Museum). Both will be
available for cab visits during the 3 day gala. This years supported charity
is the 'The Swanage Lifeboat appeal' ( http://blog.swanagelifeboat.org.uk )
and there will also be a D Class lifeboat on display. All funds raised
during the weekend by the RNLI will help fund a new lifeboat and lifeboat
station for Swanage ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-dorset-23293143 ).

There will be a 'Beerex' service, plus the 'Wessex Belle' bistro dining
train in operation on the Friday and Saturday evenings. Advance booking on
the 'Wessex Belle' is highly recommended. Traction for these services will
announced prior to the Gala.

For the Friday and Saturday of the Gala there will be a rare chance to drive
a class 20 on the Norden to Motala section of the Railway for £20. Advance
booking will be available for this by contacting the Swanage Railway or at
the Gala.

Additional Driver Experience courses are also being offered utilising Class
24 (D5081), Class 50s (50031 and 50035) and another 'visiting' loco. Full details of these courses will be published on the Swanage Railway website ( http://www.swanagerailway.co.uk )

This year there will also be an extra diesel running day prior to the 3 day
Diesel Gala. On Thursday 8th May, the railway will stage a 'Day on the
Mule'. This will feature steam and diesel classes that were used on the
Exeter to Waterloo route, also known as 'The Mule'. Locos that are scheduled
to appear at this event are 33202 , 33111, 50035 'Ark Royal', plus authentic
steam. This event will operate in addition to the scheduled steam-hauled
trains that are scheduled to run on the 'Blue' timetable.

Harmans Cross Village Hall will feature another new attraction to this years
gala - a model railway show. This will be staged on the Saturday and Sunday
and will be available free of charge to all visitors who have purchased a
rover ticket. Otherwise, the standard admission for the model railway show
will be £2 or £5 for families. The show will be organised in association with the Purbeck Railway Circle, a number of layouts on display,these will be supplemented by various trade stands. On Sunday 11th, Harmans Cross will also be the location of the 'RNLI Fun Day', organised by the RNLI. Here, various emergency service
displays plus other demonstrations can be enjoyed by visitors.

The Swanage Railway have also made a number of spaces available to trade
stands. Any group or association interested in attending should contact

Diesel Gala adult rover tickets are available for £24 for a one day rover,
£36 for 2 days and £44 for all 3 days. In addition, there are also a range
of discounted fares available for Children, 'Priv' card holders and CAMRA
members at £17 for a one day rover, £26 for 2 days and £33 for all 3 days.

Was always going to attend but with small sulzers and a Large Logo 50, wild horses wouldn't keep me away!

 

I can not wait for this gala a good selection of locos with some locos first visit to the line just hope we have better weather by then also is the 4 vep going?
