How come there's 4x Different versions of 71000?

I get the RailRoad and Digital sound, but what is the difference between R3191 and R3236 (except the price)?

Railroad and the others are separated by Paint mostly.
Smoke deflectors have handrails (but on the inside of them a quite ugly lump where the wire comes through for each).

There's a "trainset" pack with coaches and also in 2014 a to be released version with 1960s paint style (the warning flashes) and I believe a different tender, or tender mods.

Price rise us due to exactly that..Hornby's upped its trade price by quite a lot.

neither of them are particularly brilliant from what I've read, someone bought a railroad model and used the difference in price to repaint and detail it. The result was far superior than the special edition one, you can read it here about half way down pg 22

I've no use whatsoever for a 71000 on my (NCB based) layout, but that certainly makes for an interesting read!

I bought one of the more expensive versions back in December and must say I was very disappointed with it. Seems as though Hornby have taken 2 steps backwards oppose to forwards.

The model struggles with not very tight curves (my 2-10-0 doesn't even have an issue), won't go over the short radius points. There are no flanges on the rear pony wheels meaning it looks as though the engine is flying in a different direction when on curves and no spring buffers! Put me off purchasing new Hornby models if this is now the quality.

The absense of flanges on the rear pony wheels folows the practice with the Hornby Britania. It seems odd especially as both Merchant Navy and West country have swiveling pony trucks

But with Britannias they give you flanged wheels as well, if you want to swap them.

The West countries have non-swivelling pony trucks.

. I should have been more specific and said Tangmere. I assume your comment relates to current rebuilds

Hmm, must have been lucky then, I have 70000, 70004, 70013 and 70054 each has a flanged and a non-flanged wheel in the polystyrene box.

Cheers for the replies. So if I want to get a version, which is the best value for money would you say?

If your good at "having a go", go with railroad, a bit of brass, silver paint will go no end. New smoke deflectors perhaps.
I believe on another forum SAC Martin of this parish is looking into re-wheeling / connecting rods with a Britannia wheel set… the 1980's 1 piece motion seems to be a thin end of the wedge..

The railroad one. 67notes in Hattons to pre-order. Well worth it I think.

They definitely do have swivelling pony trucks, I'm looking at 34092 Weymouth right now!

The recent Rebuilt Light Pacifics (probably the last decent model Hornby has produced- and thank goodness for that!) have fixed trailing wheels, the earlier Unrebuilts have swiveling versions.

Erm 34092 is City Of Wells. 34091 is Weymouth so which one have you got?

    And hornby made both.

My 71000 arrived yesterday, with separate buffers loose in the box, so it's gone back for a replacement.
Didn't even get as far as removing it from the packaging.

I think this is a bit of a sloppy model for the packaging.
Can't knock hornby for doing 71000 on a little bit of a budget (it's got limited scope to develop and high cost for a one off, which most people will only ever buy one of), but do think there's scope to improve it a little but more than they did.
