LMS Patriot Project Updates

Yes, I am well aware of this fact. I am not prepared to waste bandwidth arguing the toss over the pros and cons of the Patriot project though. Life is far too short... There are people who support this project, and there are people who don't. It's up to each of us as individuals. I support it, but have nothing against those who don't.

Oh yes, I'm totally serious, apologise if it sounded sarcastic. And no need to apologise yourself, I know there are cynical people out there, so I understand that you can never quite tell at times, a sad aspect of today's world we live in, but what I said was genuine.

 

I just wanted to state that I appreciate your comments, which I always find well rounded and very sensible, in what can be threads of bitter digital arguments, slanders and general chaos. These threads can loose the plot in blink of an eye, so it's good to have folks around that can put threads back on firm footing move things along to smoother shores, plus closer to topic!

I am looking forward to my visit to Wales next year - intend to get down to the Llangollen to see the Patriot if possible. Sorry to have missed it in the flesh at Warley. These sort of moments with the new builds once gone, are gone forever.

The new website is now fully live and working. This will make updates easier as its accessable by more than one person. So from now on we will have regular monthly engineering update from Kevin West.

Also for any members or wish to be members our members day is on sat 19th july. This will be the normal day witha round trip, then lunch served on a round trip and tours of the works, and talks in the robinson suite. There will also be the fish and chip (Patriot Plaice) special in the evening. It will be the best members day yet with so much to see. For those of you wishing to stay over night book now to avoid disappointment. Were expecting about 200-250 people to attend the day so hope to see you there.

Just had a look at the website, very encouraging news ! Looks like there could potentially be a 3-cylindered rolling chassis by the end of the year. I'll have to get down to Llangollen during the year and have a look. Looking forward to reading the Engineering reports as they come through, very interesting reading.

A three cylindered 4-6-0 would be a fantastic achievement for the end of the year! I would love to see all three cylinders fitted by members day in july. But only time will tell if we can get anywhere near that. But the main thing is that we continue to progress. And we are always looking to increase our membership and donors. So if there is anyone out there who wants to join this fantastic project then now is the time. Its now less that 4 years untill we want to have her in steam.

 

Gavin, please accept my apologies for this alarmingly tardy reply. I'd love to come and have a look at the Patriot, thank you very much. I will PM you nearer the time. It is looking every bit the locomotive every time I see an update. Between the Patriot, the Saint and the P2…the next ten years are going to be incredible for steam enthusiasts.

 

Well I thought its been a while since I last updated this, coupled up with Kevin West's visit to some of our contract engineering locations, so here is our latest news and pictures.



here is our bogie centre casting being machined.

And of course our pattern for the motion girder brackets. Which look small but are actually 7foot long.



And also the news that Kevin has finished the CAD work in the outside cylinders and these have been sent off the the pattern makers ready to be made in the next 2 weeks with casting 3 weeks after that! Once the first has been cast and is succesfull then the second will be cast.

So it is full steam ahead already for the project this year and with more to come there has never been a better time to join. See our website for more info.

Every time we go to Llangollen we go into the works and see further progress on this new build engine (and others). Long may it continue and beat its target dates. Just need a Lottery win to push this forward faster.

 

Put a large lump of polystyrene under a huge milling machine, load in a cutting programme, turn on the machine and run for cover! What are you left with? 1 A huge pile of polystyrene bead waste 2 A pattern for a Patriot Outside Cylinder! Picture from Kevin West.

 

How are the conventional cores for the steam passageways etc replaced in this type of pattern?

 

What is the slightly darker material (e.g. the runs along the inside wall of the cylinder), if anyone knows?
