Well the Oscars are tonight (Sun) and if there were a category for the best steam clip on Ais Gill then this would get it, in my view. Others from the regulars are also good and it's perhaps unfair to single out one, but this deserves it. The light was just right - that was lucky - but the idea, location and execution are brilliant. Men and machine against the splendid but rugged beauty of it all. Wonderful. And all this after an 'iffy' first half an hour out of Carnforth.

That is a wonderful video. The weather conditions were perfect for a shot like that. The smoke trail looked to be a mile long in places.

I just hope we get such a great run on Wednesday.

Absolutely, unbelievably stunning!! A work of art that will be watched repeatedly for a very long time!! Thanks for all of the effort and consideration that you put into this production David.

    Cheers

I'll go along with those comments and ACW71000's sequence from on high at Shap needs mentioning too.

Crikey - slightly overwhelmed by the generosity of all of these comments - thank you all very much indeed. When the weather and scenery is as good as that, you just pray that the fallible one behind the camera doesn't make a mess of it. I didn't quite know what to make of it after 46115 had disappeared out of sight; staring into small screens and not actually watching the scene can be a surreal experience!

An amazing sequence, and a great break from the traditional angles.

I can understand your point of staring in to the screen. I often wonder if my eyes miss the pure beauty because I'm looking through a camera viewfinder in chase of a great photo. But for everyone one scene your eyes miss, you're bringing it to several hundreds and sharing a great moment amongst the mainline charter movement!

Exactly why I have given up any attempt at serious steam photography. I now just savour the moment happy that someone will have taken a far better photograph or video than I would have managed and will shortly upload it. :)

I wonder if anyone happened to ask the driver at Carlisle what regulator and cut-off settings he was using on that final ascent of Shap?

That is a superb video. I thought your recent shot of the S & C from the top of a mountain (Whernside??) was unbeatable but this is just as good.

If you want to keep it to yourself I will understand, but I would love to know the location and how many cameras you (and an assistant?) used.

    Dave.

I have to agree with everyone else, just spectacular and perfect conditions.
Why have you disabled comments on YT?

In true "spot the ball" fashion, I stuck my pin in the map and my guess is ... HERE
Anyone else going to have a go :) this could be a new NP sport

Sorry about the delay but I was locked out of my own website!

Anyway here's a shot of the "Scot" charging up Shap from a standing start. LINK

Thanks Jonathan - yes I agree, and there is nothing like being able to view the scene again for yourself, hopefully for years to come.

Many thanks Dave. Yes it was Whernside last summer - linesiding is becoming the next best way of keeping fit ;)

There were two of us up there but just me recording the video. Two cameras and Bill's not a million miles out with the location, but it's effectively a case of take your pick when so high up.

Thanks Bill. Comments have been disabled on my YT uploads for a while now, just a personal choice. As I say, not a million miles out with the location - but I was really on Great Shunner Fell ;)

Sell it to the Tourist Board!

Am I alone in thinking the Long Drag is Settle Jct to Blea Moor? I've never heard Ormside to Ais Gill called that before.

Lady Ann Clifford's Way, slightly to the south of where Linesider was is a fine walk with excuses to stop and watch the freight trains plodding up the hill.

Another superb long view there David, very enjoyable; it was a really great day out up in the fells.

Now, if you were really on Great Shunner Fell for the Ais Gill vid., did you film this one from High House Fell?;)

    Many thanks for sharing.

    Cheers

I've not seen any comments about the pendolino that came to a stand on Shap while 46115 was sitting waiting at Tebay. From where I was it seemed to stop pretty quickly for no reason, maybe an emergency brake application for some reason?

Are you going to be changing your username from Linesider to Hillsider? ;)

A couple of very nice videos there. The Ais Gill one has given me some food for thought for next year's WCMEs. The backlit exhaust stands out well against the dark hills.
