Official GCR spokesman has told press asking about 92214 being repainted:

"Can't help you at the moment, nothing has been announced, rumours abound, sorry."

There's a precedent for BR green on a 9F, albeit a unique and famous one, so perhaps - thought process here - rather than renaming 92214 as Cromwell Warrior, it could gain a copper cap, green livery, the number 92220 and "Evening Star" nameplates for a time. There's little chance of the real 92220 steaming any time soon perhaps the opportunity could be made to make a photo opportunity of it and make it relevant to railway preservation at the same time.

Who knows - with the NRM's blessing perhaps such a repaint could celebrate the building of, and subsequent withdrawal for preservation of the last steam locomotive built for British Railways? Other tie ins with Swindon accepted.

It is often discussed that owners have the right to paint and call their locos what ever they wish, but I think masquerading a preserved loco as another preserved loco is a bit weird.

It's been done - 30926 Repton appeared on the G&WSR as Cheltenham for the reopening of Cheltenham Racecourse Station (I think that was the occasion!).

I did wonder when writing that if it was a bit odd - the way I see it is that none of us born past 1980 have seen 92220 in steam and are unlikely to. It would be something different and also authentic (unlike Cromwell Warrior - though I accept it is the owner's prerogative and I happily acknowledged that fact previously with Cock O' The North) which is the main thing for me.

Funny, I could have sworn I checked ticket behind 92220 in 1986 and 1987, and in the later case, my then boss and family were about and his children, all under 7 - would have seen 92220 in steam. Ftrom memory, it last ran on the West Somerset about 1990!

I have a photo of Stowe renumbered and renamed as Sir Lamiel - not only one preserved engine masquerading as another, but missing a set of wheels as well!

There is a picture as you describe with the BR emblen painted out, by R.C.Riley in the Michael Welch book mentioned in post 114. There is also one of the Adams Radial in black, no emblem and 488 on the bunker in the same book.

Was it as late as 1990? Still too late for me then :) (born 1987). 24 years later and unlikely to turn a wheel in service again.

All the Standard 4 4-6-0s were painted in lined black livery initially. It was only from 1957 onwards that Swindon started to paint the W.R. allocated locos in lined green. This also applied to the Ivatt 2 2-6-0s, Std 5 4-6-0s, Std 2 2-6-0s and Std 3 2-6-2 tanks allocated to W.R. sheds.

I know that the ship has now sailed, as it were, as far as 92214 is concerned. However, given that the NYMR operates to Whitby over the Esk Valley under a derogation for some of the locomotives (ie not a full main line fit of electronics, as I understand it), then if none of the points/crossings on the EVR have the raised checkrails that have banned 9Fs elsewhere from the national network, couldn't a derogation regarding this have been applied for?

    It could.

Whether it would have succeeded is a different matter!

Just read in the latest SR that 92214 is to be repainted in lined brunswick green & MAY be named "Central Star", a combination of Great CENTRAL & Evening STAR!
The original idea of naming it Cromwell Warrior seems to have fallen by the wayside.

By that token it should perhaps be named 'Great Evening 'and used to advertise dining trains. ?
